Hi, I'm going to start filming some skateboarding this summer (I hope) and I want to make a documentary around this time next year. My plan is to end up using GH1's or similar, but until then I need something to learn on. The GL1 is really old, but I can get one for around $700 CAD, which I have a feeling is going to be the best camera for that kind of money. Thoughts?

Turns out the GL1 was sold before we could get to it. Next on the list: XL1. Considering we plan on using GH1s next year, I'm not sure such an investment is worth it. But we need something to use..

Got your PM, but I think we'll be waiting it out a bit longer. The GL2, as nice as it is, is still an awkward middle ground between supremely affordable camcorder and HD prosumer model (a la XH-A1) meaning we pay a bit more than we'd like for a bit less than we want. I think we might just tough it out with regular consumer models until our plans are complete, then by then the GH1 should be within our grasps.

Those GLs are diehard workhorses too. The footage isn't ultra crisp HD, but it can be surprisingly good too. But, if you should decide to go the XL route, at least get the 1s model. And, if you decide to go the GL route, I have a great WD58 WA lens for you.

I keep reading that the Sony VX series is better, mind you these are Youtube comments, anybody with facts to back up either end?

i know for a fact that if you get a vx1000 you will be praised in the skateboarding comuinity as having the best camera ever made... lol
some kid at the skatepark came up to me and was like my vx1000 is better then your camera (xha1) lol i was like cool... if u say so... "hows standard deff treating you?" hahahah

hahah yea for sure i love my xh a1 ... but the skateboard comunity thinks vx1000 or nothing... i donno... they are stupid hahah
