I know it's a tricky question, but for me this codec is the only thing which makes this camera problematic. Have requests in the past to manufactures worked, for similar issues?

IMO, not likely at all. You need to ask yourself, has Panny ever done this action before? Then there are your odds for the most part. I wish though... However Canon through me for a loop with the MKII update. Totally unexpected. So I guess there's a very very slight chance...

Is it all about protecting their other products? It pretty obvious these features should have been included. So I'm assuming it was on purpose..

G1 has gotten 2 firmware upgrades with bug fixes and improved features since it's release. So yes, Panasonic has done such things before. Whether they will fix this particular issue is unknown though.
