Hey I'm considering getting a HVX200a and I was wondering if someone could give me some raw footage so I can see how my Macbook (2.4Ghz 4GB RAM) will handle :kali: editing DVCpro HD.

Thanks :2vrolijk_08:

I have that MBP, and you can edit footage without incident using a FW800 drive.

the amount of test footage youd need to conduct a proper "machine capability" test would be several hundred megs
i dont think you need to waste your time hunting down test footage. i've edited tons of dvcproHD on my OLD 1.0ghz powerbook G4 with no problem at all.

your macbook should be fine. EXCEPT:
is it a macbook or macbook pro? as far as i know macbooks dont have a firewire800 port. and historically usb2.0 and firewire400 arent fast enough for dvcproHD

WGZN, Im not sure I follow your comment about U.S.B 2.0 being fast enough. Unless yo are going to be using a program like Adobe OnLocation, I dont see the importance of having a firewire port. You cant use the firewire to transfer files over to your computer (as faras I have been able to find out). Now if I am missing something let me know, but I have always been unsuccessful at tranfering via firewire so i dont see why its an issue if his comp does or does not have firewire when all you need is a USB port to transfer footage. This wont affect his editing any.

What? I have edited, managed and everithing about Dvcpro HD with my old HP pavillion zv6000 (1 core AMD xp, 2 g RAM and external firewire 400 port, Hard disk.

No problem at all!

even captured with onlocation via one sata PCMCIA card to a eSata II hard disk.

Happy with it!

It is one of the unibody regular macbooks that came out last year, no firewire but I have an old PC with firewire that I would use for capture to a portable hardrive then plug in to my macbook for editing. Unless I am able to get the footage from the P2 card via USB 2.0? Capture speed I'm not worried about just worried about laggy editing.

ok, ok... let me clarify:

my personal experience has been - as far as on a MAC using FCP: usb2.0 and firewire400 are not typically fast enough to use successfully for editing dvcproHD. i recently moved a project that i had previously been editing on a fw800 drive onto a fw400 drive and though it "worked" i got constant dropped frames and VERY laggy playback

apparently FCP or MACs in general is less forgiving of slower data transfer rates than say premiere pro on windows may be...

now you can use what ever the heck you want to TRANSFER footage to and fro. it only becomes crucial when you try to use a slower connection paradigm for your scratch (editing) drive.

and thats what makes a macbook (non-pro) a problem. is its lack of options for high-performance external connectivity.
