Hi, got the GH1 on saturday, took it out for a spin that pm, I hadn't read the manual by then so mostly fully auto. I do wish I'd taken a tripod, I did get a lot of mud on the whip pans at the end of shots or when moving during a shot. In general I'm really impressed, if you move gently and edit wisely it produces stunning images.

Beautiful . I love the sharpness of the stocks lens. And the color is great. The good thing with the GH1 is that you can get one of the new very light tripods that have nice fluid heads for panning. Thanks for posting. Still one more piece showing how great this cam is. Did you use autofocus or manual?
Hey John what "very light tripods" are you referring to?

How unfortunate though, it's a Pal 1080 25p. From what I'm being told, the pal 1080/50i mode compresses better than the 1080/60i. If true, it's nothing to be excited about in 60i land. We can't obtain every little "bit" that GH1 1080/60i needs...

I used auto focus mainly, switched over on some of the plant shots as it was hunting when the wind moved the flowers. The screen jumps to a zoom automatically when you focus in manual mode

There was alot of mud in shots when quick panning. I edited most of it out, I like the idea of shooting with this camera mainly on a tripod without zooms and limited use of pans

Vimeo on my core 2 laptop with vista 64 is really stuttery, my main edit machine has a quad core with winxp and runs the files much smoother

I saw a few at Adorama recently. They had them on floor display. Next time I go I'll write down the names and post them.

Any regrets over buying the camera Andy?
Would you use it professionally?

There was alot of mud in shots when quick panning.
Other shooters are trying this settings below to minimize the "mud effect" on 1080. Can you please try it and report back to us please. We would also like to see more normal panning with the settings. Thanks.
shooting full HD with +2 sharpness and noise reduction OFF seemed to cure the issue or at least make it much less noticeable.

Come on, no need to be melodramatic.

The 1080/60i compression is going to be fine. You will see. Then it will be something else to complain about of course. We are going to have a very good time shooting with this cam in the good old USof A. Remember my words.

Hey Andy, any chance you can upload the shots where you encountered mud just so most of us can get an idea of how severe or non-severe this problem is and to shed light for the people on the fence about buying this camera. Okay thanks and Great footage! especially of the flowers!

I am looking forward to actually seeing 1080/24 from a 60i camera. Converted correctly of course....

wait. is there a way to turn this feature off? i don't want to to zoom in every time i'm manually focusing! because most of the time I'll be watching the frame AND focusing at the same time. and I can't keep control of the frame if its all zoomed into it. please tell me there's a way to turn that feature off!

Don't panic! :)
Instead, read the manual. Be happy!

I need to do more tests and compare with my other cameras, I can see a place immediately in jobs I do for Kent TV, an internet tv portal for our local county council. I also think the resolution of the lens would be great used in a locked off wide situation, I have always had to add a w/a adaptor to other small HD cams as the lens is never wide enough, this setup will beat all those unless there is very fast action
Andy
ps I will try to find time to post some of the mud bits later today or tomorrow

Obviously a lot sharper than the D90. Good stuff. I want one now. What music is that you used?

Does the stock lens have backfocus capabilities i.e zoom in focus and zoom out, and all is in focus still?
Where did you pick up your GH1 from in the UK AndyW69?

The stock lens has no backfocus adjustments, the viewfinder can be automatically zoomed in to aid focus, it does take a bit of getting used to though. The autofocus seemed quite good although when hunting the slight zoom effect is distracting and renders the shots a bit useless (see the shot of the vintage car)

first of all thanx for the manual link. Mine has no english manual, only german, french, italian etc...
I dont really worry about mud anymore, I have a c-mount and nikon adapter and am enjoying the various bokehs of various lenses.
The digital zoom takes care of vignetting c-mounts and the nikon ai lenses make incredible pictures!!!!!
This lil cam is quite capable and a joy to use already even if panasonic updates the firmware in some months.
