View Full Version : Anyone lagging behind?

Solomon Chase

So it's June 7th and I just finished the first draft of my script.

No storyboards.
No actors.
No locations.
No camera (Panasonic GH1's haven't arrived yet!)

I just got my casting call posted on various sites.

How's everyone else doing? Anyone more behind than me? :D

Aweee well ive got storyboard, all main cast, locations and camera sorted - my killer is the time between now - and after shooting for doing graphics and mattes etc. But i'll be working 24/7 to make sure thats all done in time though so theres not a chance it won't be - just a chance ill probably have a nervous breakdown the day after its uploaded haha!

Now thats cutting it a bit fine Solomon, but of course you can set your mind to spend the day hunting locations, photograph and then storyboard the next.

Actors - depends if they need to be 'amazing' or if you can bring stuff out of people you know, who may be more reliable and available?

If your lacking production days, for the shoot - and have to rush stuff in, consider a more free style of cinematography, (handheld, less stuff on the sticks) obviously it depends if that fits with your style.

But actually plan your shoot 'for the time' and don't go too crazy to squeeze in a conventional production model if you think you'll fall at the last hurdle!

Good luck mon amie!

3rd and final day of shooting this week. Then some sound work. Then the post production. My wife and daughter will be out of town for a week, so I can finish up the edit and post pro undisturbed! I will miss them though....

I'm in the same boat mate, if not a little worse to be honest.

Still deciding on what camera to order.
Need to film next week.
Also need to settle on a film IDEA.

I'm not making it for the deadline.

Submitting to other fests, and may make the film longer.

I'm right on schedule although hitting 6 minutes is going to be really tough... There will definitely be a longer cut for other festivals...

Solomon,

You should be fine if you really work it. I'm similar to Robbie now. The concept got a bit too "big" for this. I was working on my VFX stuff, and my workflow is too complex to get out a workable film in the time I have. Plus I had a week vacation in the middle of the month.

So I won't make it. I really hope a lot of the films make it on time. This seems to be the one fest so far where concepts are big. I think a lot of people are trying different stuff.

Medal of Merit - In Post and waiting on other half of footage. DP is editing VSFX and then I get to edit the rest.

Carpe Diem (Musical) - I'm having pain with that one because all we have left is recording the music and the guy who is doing is has written the lyrics and he said he would be working on the music last week and I really hope that was true because he doesn't realize that we have a deadline here and the fact it takes longer to make a musical. Have to wait till tomorrow to call him when he's back in office! But everything is set and ready to go except music, recording the songs with the actors, one location, and having a problem with one actor. He doesn't like to answer calls so casting a new one.

i feel like questfest is lagging behind ... less than half the posts of the least posted fest (since zombiefest, not counting adfest)

of course ... no fat monster presence means -10,000 posts on it's own ...

We shot about 2/3 of our short this weekend, but still have about one more full day to shoot... which we can't do until after the 25th (when our actress returns from a trip) and on top of that I'm gone until the 27th on business as well... we'll be PUSHING it!

It does feel like activity is down.

CreatureQuest is on schedule...for now. Principle photography is complete...I hope. I'm running slightly over 6 for my rough cut, so I should get under the wire.

My excuse is that I'm waiting till the last minute in hopes that the fedex man will show up with the GH-1. :) Shooting is scheduled for the 20th-21st, and weather dependent... so if it happens then, I'll start a thread and lock myself in the edit suite for a week. Goodbye sleep again!

Also have a second 'fun' project planned. That one should be done in time for sure... but you never know with these things.

I feel like I'm behind, but that's just because of all the other stuff I've got going on from now to July 3rd. I've pretty much locked picture, which is good because I don't really have any time to work on the film for a week or so.

I've shot the film, but the start-up drive on my mac broke down. So I can't start editing. I haven't even looked at all the dailies yet.

I'm going to France for a week between now and the deadline, so I feel like I'm in a bit of trouble.

Crap.

I haven't cast my female lead yet, it's been raining nonstop here in MN, payment for 2 jobs has been delayed so we have negative budget... but we have a door... this one is gonna be tough...

I still have to get approval for mine but I don't know what the quest will be yet until I shoot. Its going to be a cinema-verite' type joint so the story will form in the edit.

I just wrapped on Sunday, but don't have the tools to capture, so Chris Curl is doing it for me. So I am waiting for that, then I have to teach myself the editing software, drop some After Effects action for color correction and a few FX adds, then give it to my sound guy Steve so he can score and mix.

The only good thing is that my wife and kids will be at her parents for the last two weeks of June, so I have all the time I need to do this. I just wish I would have shot in May. (wipes brow)

Why do I get the feeling there's going to be a LOT of shooting going on in the next couple weeks?

Because there is. :)

I think we did have a drop in films this QTR. Might have to do with summer. But at the same time, Timefest, same QTR had more than double the attempted entries.

So I am wondering if the general economy is affecting people. Because I can't imagine that the pitch would drive too many people away. And overall, people are getting started later.

It's looking as if we have a high drop out rate this one too. Either fully dropping out or just pulling the film from the fest to have more time to work on it.

Don't know what it is this time around.

// Just checked, we are down a little over 50% of attempted entries from last fest.

Why do I get the feeling there's going to be a LOT of shooting going on in the next couple weeks?

I'm shooting the weekend of June 20th. Three nights. Cutting it close!

I always tend to do this... I have 4 locations for the shoot (which is probably too many to get permission) and I've had to lock in the cast and crew. It looks now that we're ready to roll. Next time, I'll just shoot at my home!

I think the economy has had an affect as well, materially and psychologically. I know that I'm having to spend more time and effort earning a living and don't have as much time to be creative and plan for my own movie.

That's my excuse....er, reason. :)

The number of dropouts is AWESOME for people like me. I figure it like this...only ten people enter, I automatically make top ten. It's a win-win!

On the real, I do hope everyone gets their films made. Can't let Tarts take it all without at least some competition. :)

:kali:I don't think anyone can top me... I am doing bad! (with questfest that is) I just have like a rush of work back to back ever since I posted my Thread! and it's not letting me catch up to nothing! I don't think I'll make it but who knows!
My M2e lens adapter is ordered, paid, and in production, now I'm just waiting for it to ship out.

That's another thing that was kind of holding me back a little because I like to use my own gear.

I do want to wish good luck to everyone who makes it. Hopefully I can submitt at least a rough cut. I would be happy with that.

later!

I know! I saw this thread and I was like... "oh God! I think I fall into this category":nads:

I'm still excited tho looking forward to see everyone's stuff....

I think I'm going to drive down the street with my camera hanging out the window upside down on the tripod just to submit at least something to watch.
I can title it "Questfest Attempt":-Dum(DBG):

SHOOT IT in a grocery store...where no one knows wtf is going on. Just rush the place and rewrite your scene and song around the manager coming over and telling you that you're not supposed to be there. So even in the chaos of being kicked out, the viewing audience will think it's all part of the scene and thus think that the manager is an acting genius because it seemed so real. Then you can tell the manager about this site and everyone praising him and then he won't give a shit about you raiding his store a few weeks earlier!

ITS WIN-WIN!

WTF is wrong with me! I am tweeking on NOT smoiking in two days!!!

shot the most hardest short to shoot and get together.. the musical. Got a rough edit and it's 6 mins and 25 seconds.. and now lacking on time length.. anyone know if 25 secs over will DQ me? I got a 6 min and 18 miliseconds i cut down to as well, but no title or credits so that will add about 4-5 seconds. But the 25 secs version looks better. If anyone or any admins can tell me, I need to know ASAP so I can move on with editing.

The maximum runtime of the films is not to exceed SIX MINUTES (6:00:00) + a leader that will be provided by DVXuser.

Just going on the comp rules - I assume that means no. And in turn others have had to cut to meet this.

AFAIK though, theres no rules to adjusting sound on the leader... Im wondering, and I dont know it would work for you at all, but could you just run the sound over the leader at the beginning? And then pick up the images from where the leader ends? Just a thought.

I would but te first song starts like 5 secs into the film and the first shot you have to see what's going on. Thanks for the suggestion though. Didn't think of that. Too bad I can't do it. I know some other ways I can take away a couple more seconds.

EDIT: I was able to pull about 5 seconds off, added the title, and frame of credits. Got the film down to 5:59:23 -- wow! perfect! No more "Lagging Behind" for me.

seems like many people are having problems with making the deadline. Petition for extension, anyone? Let's get some more entries in! I've battled many sleepless nights for this one so far and would hate to see it go to waste because i couldn't output on time. Editing is killing me right now esp sound mixing.
