First footage of K-7, 720p mode @ beta firmware, provided by Ned Bunnell, president of Pentax Imaging USA

http://vimeo.com/4924324

or check Ned's Blog

http://nedbunnell.blogspot.com/

The sample on vimeo can be downloaded (2:17 min / 160 MB, h.264)

The original K-7 MJPEG source footage of this sample should be around 1 GB

EDIT:

Finally, an official sample movie from Pentax Imaging:

Also note the in-camera stabilisation working at the 200mm handheld shot

We need a FAQ for all these cameras.

Well if the chart is correct, that gives a 73Mbit/s M-JPEG bitrate on the highest setting. Should look pretty pretty pretty pretty good.

anyone know about shutter speed control for shooting, I know you can set the aperture before but haven't seen anything about shutter speed.

Yes, K-7 at best settings is supposed to have 74Mbit/s @ 1024p (3:2)

5dMKII has a max of 40 Mbit/s I think?

Shutter control details or any clear specs about manual ISO controls aren't released by now (at least I didn't find any yet), I guess Pentax won't publish anything here until they're close to finishing firmware. Facts are manual aperture control and autofocus during movie mode, exposure lock, LV out via HDMI, shake reduction during movie mode

But thatīs with a pretty old codec, isnīt it?
AVCHD will probably need less bandwith for a similar quality...

Looks pretty clean for the most part. Candle footage is a bit noisy. Why is this posted in the GH1 forum? :-P

Shutter speed is automatic according to Pentax rep over at dpreview. He also
mentions that rolling shutter is similar to D90

Also same guy says auto focus is not continuous in video mode

mjpeg is less than half as efficient as H.264 as it's compressing each frame individually so the compression should be about on par with the MKII and better than the GH1. There is no mention of manual shutter and ISO control in the preliminary specs but hopefully pentax will update the firmware before it ships in July.

Why is this posted in the GH1 forum? :-PCause there's no K-7 forum :)
At 1.300 $ it's competing with GH1 plus I think it's interesting to compare and watch the DSLR video progress in general to get an idea how fast it's improving.

I own a D90 but I'm dreaming of a Pocket-RED like everybody else here.

Also same guy says auto focus is not continuous in video modeYes you're right, strangely they say it was possible in firmware 0.20 but uncertain for 1.0

Btw, K-7 is totally weatherproof!

just posted this on Ned's vimeo page- "G'day Ned. The mjpeg looks good. There's thousands of indie filmmakers trying to decide on a DSLR right now. Update the firmware with 24/25p, manual shutter and ISO control and you'll sell truckloads of these things."

Well we know the codec will not be the weak link with this cam.
This should be so easy to edit! To bad it isn't 1080p.

Just a side question about these cameras K-7 or GH1, is there a way to use a video assist monitor with the HDMI out? or does your monitor need an HDMI input? Are there adapters to make it an HD SDI or component? As a Steadicam Operator this a great concern.

For anyone that's interested in the K7 for video, it appears that the actual internal resolution is 768x1024, and which is then doubled to 1536x1024. This not too surprising, since it's exactly what the Pentax K20D did in 21fps burst mode.

You can read all the nitty gritty here:

That was speculation on the posters part.
EDIT: Retracted, just reached the end of the forum post~

But aside from that I'm seriously thinking of switching camps now, a heck load of good things going for the K7 there. (No 1080 though)

This will probably start a similar discussion like with the HVX not being "true" HD...

I think I finally understand what "Pana-Mojo" is

Not saying the K-7 looks bad, actually it has a very pleasing HD look at an very interesting prictag, but Iīll guess it would need some CC (and maybe even a little grain) to give it more of the organic look I got used to like so much...

It's a good start from a company that has almost no video experience at all. They will improve.. Quality isn't bad for a v.1. However they need to get to v.3 or 4 to really understand video technology enough that it's really fantastic. If they stay on a good development track and don't stop.
