I'm building my first dolly and have encountered a problem with the wheel assembly. I'm sure it's a rookie mistake but I can't seem to figure it out. I think it's the wheels I'm using but would greatly appreciate some help.

The plans I'm working from say " put a 1/4-20 2 inch hex bolt through the wheel followed by 1/4 flat washer, 2 nuts (for spacing), 1 1/4 fender washer (then the rail for the base) another fender washer and a final nut."

Problem is, there's nothing holding this harware to the wheel. As picutred, the bolt goes completly thru the wheel. I tried putting a fender washer on the outside of the wheel (like a hub cap) and various arrangements of nuts and washers between the wheel and rail and the wheel either binds or spins itself off the nut.

Please identify my rookiie-fabricator error! Do I need wheels with a smaller opening for the nut?

Thank you

You're missing the bearings in the wheels.

Son of a bungee cord! The salesman at the sporting goods shop asked me if I needed the bearings and, since they were not mentioned in the instructions, I bought wheels without them.

Thanks

Here is the final product. Built from "Billy's Blueprints" on the Digital Juice website. As per the advice of the members here, I sized it down from 3 ft square to 32 inches square to fit through doorways. The carpeting idea and the push pole bracket ( a flag pole holder) came from another post on this forum,

If I had to do it again, I'd figure out a way to make the wheel assemblies independent. I'd also use a drill press to make the mounting holes in the angled aluminum; drilling into the angle by hand was a PITA. All totaled it was $181.47; however, I could have saved about $60 if I scavenged the wheels and bearings rather than purchasing new ones.

I'm going to try to produce a short "making of" video to cover some things that were not obvious in the original plans and video.

As you can see, I went with a ride on-option for my 1st AC :)

By the way, I've found many thrift shops in my area where I can get a pair of rollerblade skates (8 wheels) for $5 or less. Check around.

I bought a bunch of dirt cheap berrings and wheels at Toys R Us.

I looked at skate shops but they are specialty places that usually only carry the high end stuff.
