I came upon some rods from another project. I was thinking about using them as rods to put Redrock follow focus and shoulder support. The rods I have are 15.8mm. With some tweaking to the RR hardware, would I be able to use these?

Probably, you may have to twist them as you push them through the rod supports .
I have intermixed Cavison, Zacuto, Cinevate and those "Indian rods from Ebay" , thier measurements are slightly different though . But the hardware is the important thing , if the clamps are solid they should work no problem, especially for shoulder support ! Cheers

If you push to hard you could bend and throw off the alignment. Not to mention you'll really scratch the finish and probably damage the rod or support clamp.

Most rod systems are made of aluminum parts and stainless steel or carbon fiber rods, both which have a higher tensile & shear strength then aluminum. It's almost like pushing a screwdriver thru a Mcdonalds straw... However if you can get it to fit, then go for it.

I've seen and made tolerances of 14.83mm - 15mm +/- .03

If interested I've got about 25 pairs of solid carbon fiber left. The rods are 100% solid carbon fiber and at 25" you won't find a better deal. Let me know if you'd like a pair.

thanks for the input guys. I'll go ahead and give this a shot. I only need it to get me through a wedding next month and then I'll probably consider the real thing with got cf rods. Trying to save some cash for a new prime.

In my experience, 15.8mm is going to be WAY too big. You really need to be somewhere near the tolerances of what twocik23 is describing. I have some CF rods that are 14.95mm and are all scratched up because they're a little too big. The difference between 15mm and 15.8mm is huge.

The only other deciding factor is going to be how the rod-bracket is constructed. If it's the kind that is two pieces that sandwich down on the rods (like the way the indisystem rod system (http://www.indifocus.com/products_indirailspro.htm) seems to be constructed) you might be okay, but if you have to fit the rod into a hole, I wish you luck. I don't know how the RR hardware is constructed, but my experience with a variety of rod support systems a 15.8mm rod would never fit.

What's the diameter of the carbon rods and how long are they? How much are you asking for them?

When we specify our 15mm clamps, we leave about 20 microns space for optimum clamping force. Most rods (good quality ones) are bang on 15mm, so we go 15.020 with the clamping bore

If it is an issue, you can put some abrasive past on either a go-no-go plug or on the rod and rub it round until it slides easily.
