Hello. I'm about to undertake my first DIY project to support my video interests. I'll be using plans from "Billy's Blueprints" on Digital Juice. I've also looked through some of the threads here; in a recent one, someone questioned the size of the platform.
Is there a consensus on how big to make the platform?
The plans I have call for 2 sheets of 36in x 36 in 1/2 plywood. So 3ft square.
Is that too big, too small or just about right for ordinary, indoor operations?
Thanks
Bob

I would suggest something narrower to move around and fit through doorways, but with added 'wings' that slip on for when you need extra room for the tripod and a stool. It is a ride-on dolly right?

I have found that around 32" wide is best as it fits easily in smaller areas between furniture and down halls. 4' to 4' 6" long is good too. The longer length tends to run smoother with more stability over the tubes.
Look at my Hyperchariot thread and see my build of a dolly that does both running shots and pushes and pulls. It has a ride on capabiliy for a steadycam operator too. We have found that for the STRICKEN feature film shoot this dolly is worth its weight in gold.
On the cheap though, 5/8" to 3/4" plywood 32"x48-54" long with really good precision bearing wheels and a push-pull rod down on the base will serve you well. Put rubber furniture floor cups on the three places where the tripod symmetrically mounts and use velcro straps to lock down the three tripod feet. :)
Best if it fits through doorways...

Thanks. Excellent points. This will be for push/pull applications, not ride-on.
