I am new to Vegas and I am not quite sure what the specifics are regarding rendered file size. I rendered a 2 minute 57 second clip as an .avi file and it is 643mb. Is this correct? ??? If not, what did I do wrong?
And if so, I need a much bigger hosting package.

it depends very much which codec you have chosen to render the file.
As a rule of thumb, 1 minute of DV video is roughly 220 MB so your 3 minute file will be around 650 MB.
You did nothing wrong, it's just the way it is with DV.
If you want to host stuff on a website you should consider using different codecs (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV, Quicktime) that allow for lower data rate and/or better compression. I have seen videos encoded with Windows Media 9 that were about 30 MB per minute and looked excellent.
