I went to the vegas forums for help on this, but as you can see from this thread:
http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=307657

They are a bit counterproductive as they keep answering the same things over and over beccause they dont read the whole thread...

Heres the problem: I bought windows XP pro,
an 80gb 8mb cache 7200 rpm harddrive,
firewire,
and firewire card with three FW outputs.

THen i installed vegas, YAY. Time to capture from my canonzr60, woot consumer camera!

However, on an average, i lose about 300 out of every 1000 frames, almost 1/3.... and that's with the preview off while capturing

My specs:
1.8ghz p4
256mb sdram
geforce 2mx 32mb

My new harddrive however, has windowsxp installed on it, and that makes it slower? or so im told?

The problem is that that windowsxp isn't mine its a persons at work and they installed it on the new drive, beecause i fergot to format the old harddrive

Old harddrive, which is also 7200 but slower: read - 27mb/s write 30mb/s

Ok, so help?

I read through the posts on the vegas forum, and truthfully, they actually seemed quite productive. Remember that people don't have access to your computer so all they can do is reccomend things that may be causing problems.
Ideally to capture (and yes I have read all the other posts) you want more then 256 RAM, that is the minimum to even run windows XP. Get another 256 or just upgrade to 1gig of ram and you should be fine. Also like others have said, don't capture to the system drive, capture to a separate hard drive. Other than that, there isn't much more I can think of.

So ram would be the problem then? Fucking a, why dont i just fucking buy an "inferno" or whatever that supercomputer is called, ive already put 500 grand into this piece of shit pc anyways

sorry, sorry, just a little difficult if ive been waiting and saving for 4 months to buy this shit and now it doesn't work... *breath*

Ok, so dv writes at about 4 megs per second correct?

Are you capturing to your system drive? From what I've read elsewhere, you're not supposed to capture to your system drive. You should capture to a second hard drive.

Here's a thread that discusses a problem similar to yours.

No i am not capturing to my system drive, i am capturing to a drive that is able to read at 27 mb/s and write at 30 mb/s

Could it be because the DMA is only set to 2, rather than 5?

Boot down your computer. Then restart and press your F2 key and get into the Bios. Check your second drive and make sure it is in Auto and not off. If it is off, when you capture to it, you will have a ton of drop frames. Make sure it is also set to secondary slave drive to. Hope this helps

Yes it is set to AUTO, both are, except one is primary master and one is primary slave... but it should be set to secondary?

Why?

I had the same problem with a 2nd drive I put in 2 weeks ago. My OS and Vegas ect... is all on Drive:C *which is my Primary Master drive. My other drive is drive F: which is set to Auto and Secondary Slave. This should work for you. For best results, Ive been told to set your video drive to be your Primary master. Give that a shot and see. You can always reverse what you did in your bios settings. Check this link out which was posted by another member a few weeks ago.

I think i realize what it is... beecause it is not only in Vegas that im having trouble capturing, but in WINDOWS moviemaker as well

So it had to be something external, the camera perhaps? Hmm ... nope, i went over to a friends and tried on his mac, perfect

That leaves only the cable and the firewire board

I inspeccted the board and the little yellow lines that connect it into the port arnt all the way in, like i think they should be... correct?

That means theres not enough spacee in my case (motherboard for p4 takes up 85% of the case, to give you an idea of size)

If that is the case, then I have to buy a bigger case... god

what brand of firewire card do you have?

you want an OHCI compliant one.. ADS or SIIG are the two best ones....

that could be an issue...

monte, did you check what happens when you capture to your system drive?
It might be a DMA issue on the second drive. Go to device manager in the control panel
and check for each IDE channel if it is set to Ultra DMA mode.

What if its only set to ultra dma 2? rather than 5?
