Audio Sync with an external monitor?

why is the audio a little off when you listen to it on the computer speakers and watch the preview on an external monitor through the svideo of a cam with firewire.
Help with this please,

Options/Preferences/Video Device/Sync Offset (frames). A value of 2 works for me, but it might not be the same for you. Fiddle with it some.
