I was toying around in Vegas while editing a wedding vid and found a pretty cool look if anyone's interested. I've noticed that the cinematography in a lot of films today have a very blown out high contrast look. The Dawn of the Dead remake comes to mind. Colors are vibrant, but not to over exposed looking. So... I took my video and duplicated the track. Set the top track to ADD. Add any Brightness/Contrast filter and change to these settings.

BRIGHTNESS = -0.020
CONTRAST = 0000

Leave the last setting as is, and tweak as needed. There you have it. Personally I love the look it adds to 24p footage (as long as it wasn't shot overexposed) I used this during an outside ceremony and I swear it was almost comparable to 35mm. The bride looked outstanding without the shot being too blown out. I wish I could post a grab but I'm at my other job right now. I'll try later. If someone wants to post a shot go for it. Also if you're battling a color temp nightmare with windows causing a blue tint use the technique above on BOTH tracks and add a green tint to your top track only. ADJUST as need and it turns the blue hue from the higher color temp to a greenish tint mimicking The Matrix look!

sounds kind of what magic bullet does. wonder if it renders faster. I will do a test sometime and post my results.

Renders way faster. I'll definately post a grab of this later.

I liked the Matrix-ish look of the last one. Didn't see too much to get excited about in the other ones, though.

But hey, if your client likes it, that's all that counts. :)

Wait a sec -- are TOP pics the effect pics of the bride? That makes a difference. Yes, a good improvement.

Yes. Top pic is with effect. the second is without. Same goes for the others.

I was wondering if you could do it with Magic Bullet only, or does the second layer add additional benefits ( i.e. softness)

Just a note from someone who uses Vegas everyday in real Hollywood productions... vegas' color correction tools can do everything Magic Bullet can do... only faster (much much faster). I purchased Magic Bullet when it first came out (The After Effects version at $1500) and stopped using it for look finishing because it took too long to get the results I was looking for. I've tried the Magic Bullet for editors and find it to have the same downside as the full version. I can tweak my stuff using Vegas and see my results very quickly. It also renders much faster. Just my $0.02.

I apply this same affect to almost everything I shoot

I start with BRIGHTNESS adjustment, then CONTRAST or CENTER CONTRAST and then apply the SECONDARY COLOR CORRECTOR (usally staying just off center in the Sepia area.

I noticed the Grbas look dark. Are they underexposed on purpose? My grabs tend to start off looking like the TOP pics first and then I bring the B/C into play to crush some blacks.

I always shot a little under exposed John. When adjusting the exposure I tend to not leave any zebra markings at all which is the opposite of how I was trained. Granted of course I'm able to do that and still see detail in my subject. For me this seems to give me the most realistic film look.

Im digging it.

Its our discretion on how to do it for our own purposes. I agree with you, I prefer to see no Zebras.

Tmon,

I know there are lots who could benefit from some of your color corrected .veg files if you're willing to share them at the VASST site - www.vasst.com

Zenote is also a series of plugs that integrate directly with Vegas and will smoke Magic Bullet in render times too. They're coming really soon.
