So I shot this wedding last weekend and I am going through my tapes, and low and behold, the bride during one of the interviews that I shot is wearing a bright red sweatshirt and of course, I get the dreaded red chroma flare like crazy in the shot. So I'm thinking, there has to be a way to get rid of it, I have read other posts that talked about this, and even a plugin that you can get for FCP to get rid of it. When all of a sudden, I notice this little plugin in my Video FX box that says, "Chroma Blur". HMMMMM, I said with a grin. What does this do, so I applied it to the clip. . . and nothing. then I notice the sliders. First I move the verticle slider all the way to the right, and wapow! half of that nasty red stuff is gone, and it hasn't affected anything else in the picture. "cool!" I say outloud, waking my wife from her peasful slumber. Thne I start to move the horizontal slider, all the way to the right, and , and, well, I almost sh*t myself. Completely gone, and again nothing else was effected in the shot. It only seems to effect colors that are out of gammat, or in other words, that have extremely high chroma noise.
So I'm all excited that I finally solved the red problem in DV, when all of a sudden I notice something even better. On a shot with the bride in her wedding dress there is this nast Blue chroma bleed that is mucking up my shot, so I say, what the hey, and applie the chroma blur to it as well, and wham zam thank you mam, problem solved. I just thought I would share this little tidbit of information, as I have noticed that others have complained about the problem in other posts, and I never really saw them come to a workable solution. Hale the Vegas GOD. . . . . Sony? whooops.

Below are some screen grabs so you can see more clearly. Enjoy.

It actually looks like these screen grabs don't show how bad the original chroma bleed looked, but rest assured that it was pretty bad. The red on her sweatshirt looked like a picket fence as well as the blue line along her spine in the wedding dress. The bottom pics are the adjusted ones.
It looks like the jpg compression softened the image slightly so that the chroma effects are not as noticeable.

Chroma Blur is THE BOMB for greenscreen work. *We did an extensive greenscreen shoot recently, and the keying I was able to get in Vegas, using Chroma Blur, was better than what the other guy was getting using Serious Magic Ultra (sorry SM, but it was!) *Chroma Blur makes greenscreen actually practical in DV, it's a fantastic tool.

For greenscreen stuff I usually do just a horizontal blur, there's not much need for a vertical blur. *However, beware that it is a RENDER PIG... it's extremely slow.

On some shots, when I had it maxxed out at 4 pixels, there was a noticeable overall blur to the image, so you do have to be careful with it. *But yes, it's an excellent effect that has many uses.
