i nearly had my left ring finger severed completely off today, an it's because i hadnt yet put on gloves, as i was handling glass. i set my gloves aside while i pulled a piece of plywood off my truck, but there was a 3ftx5ft piece of plate glass that i knew was behind it. it must have cracked when i tied it all down, so as i grabbed the plywood to slide it off the glass rack of my truck, the top 1/2 of the glass slid down and landed on 3 of my fingers, instantly drawing blood. my ring finger got it the worst...when i saw the bone, my body went in shock, and i passed out for a minute...not a fun feeling...i was at the local dump and there were guys on tractors driving around me...but none of them noticed...when i came to, i sutured the cuts the best i could, called my boss, and went home.....
all because i didn't put my gloves on first.
so, please, as im typing this with one hand...i don't know what you all do for a living, but when there is danger and you have safety equipment to aid you, USE IT! this is miserable. i made a huge mistake, and i have learned my lesson.
btw, my boss is blind in one eye from taking a spark while using a grinder, because he wasnt wearing safety glasses. i had more than enough foresight to put those gloves on...
thanks for reading...this sucks.

A guy I used to work with had to have his thumb replaced after taking it off with a circular saw. The guy in charge was apparently rushing everyone and he was cutting a board he held up himself instead of putting on a table... which doesn't tend to work well. He was lucky being able to get it reattached.
Usually these things don't happen. Usually you'll be fine... but if you happen to be in one of the unusual cases, the effects can be pretty damn bad.

somebody lost there head in the freight elevator at my work 5 or 6 years ago for not pulling down the safety gate. A bit of an extreme example but no one ever made that mistake again.

I always emphasize safety on set, and everyone finds it funny.

I had a finger bit off in a fight back in the day. They won't stitch a human bite at all becuase it's such a nasty infectous bite. They simply slid it back on to the bone, doped it all up, wrapped it all up and hoped for the best. I'll be danged if it didn't grow back on and within a half dozen years or so, I even regained feeling in it. Over the years, I could literally feel the nerves rettaching... felt like needles som, etimes like when your foot falls asleep and is comin' back?
Today I have full use of it with no tingle or numbness whatsoever.
Can barely even see any scarring.

You know it's going to be a good post when it starts out, "I had a finger bit off in a fight..."
Well, that's what you get when you try to throw the Ring of Power back into the fires.
Am I reading this right? You just placed your finger back where it should have been, taped it up, and it reformed back to your hand in 6 years? It was taped up that long?
I lost a nipple in a skateboarding accident one time. It grew back in a couple weeks.

No it was just taped for a week or two. The bone did not detach and the finger was simply slid back onto it. The severed nerves are what took a half dozen years to heal.
Was a bummer playing quitar with no feeling in a digit. I had to relearn.
I have to ask, as a longtime skater, dude how did a nipple come off?

Ouch, Sorry to hear about your fingers. That's horrible, and scary as hell to say the least. I wish you the best in your recovery and hope you regain full feeling in the nerves.
your absolutely right about wearing gloves.
We were shooting on location at a Panera Bread a few weeks ago for the feature film "MY INTUITION" Our gaffer plugged in an extension cord that had a short. Attached was a 2,000 watt Fresnel going into a 20 amp circuit. I caught the spark shoot out of the wall from about ten feet away with my peripheral vision, When i realized what had happened it was way to late and he had already gotten third degree burns up and down his hand. He had gloves on no less than thirty seconds before to change out the lamp. Then took them off for what ever reason. I don't know if the leather gloves would have saved him from the shock , but i would be willing to bet it would have helped with the burns. Need less to say he's a tough old bastard and finished the shoot. One of our production assistants is a paramedic and thought he should go in for some testing . but he refused and signed off on any legal ramifications. Scary stuff. Safety is always first . I'm wicked anal when it comes to sand bagging the stands and taping down cables and such. It just seems no matter how careful accidents still happen.
I think this was a good thread that everyone should read. I don't know if there's a thread that this could fall under but with some added content it might make a decent sticky.

Ok, I'm picturing you with nothing but a bone for a finger, then you sliding your skin back over it like a sheath over a sword.
I was bombing a hill I'd never seen before. Earlier that day, I put some new bearings on (ABEC 7 ... Had 3's on before that ... BIG difference), AND loosened my trucks for tighter turns. Anyhoo, I was flying down this hill, and I reached a speed that I suddenly realized, "I think I'm speeding." Seconds later, the board went squirrelly and I slid about 15 to 20 feet down the road. My face caught my fall, but I slid on my chest. Ripped me wide open. A day later, I was able to see myself in the mirror. No nipple. Couldn't believe it.
Also: As my hands healed from the road rash, I never changed the gauze (spelling?). When i finally removed it, I was unwrapping, unwrapping, unwrapping ... stopped. It just ended, but my hand wouldn't drop it. My hand had healed OVER TOP of the gauze. It was attached to me. It went in on the right side of my palm, and out the left side. I could see the texture and bumping on my palm underneath the skin. Crazy! I had to rip my palms open to get it out. It didn't pull easy, either.
