So... it seems that the big challenge will be to get cheap wide glass on the GH1.

According to the Panny rep I spoke to last week end, the 7-14 will retail around 1500$CAD (!)...

So I was thinking, I use a Raynox 0.66 wide angle adapter (http://www.raynox.co.jp/english/dcr/dcr6600pro/indexdcr6600eg.htm) on my HV20 with great results regularly.

Anybody tried something similar with the GH1 stock lens?

You could also get the olympus 9-18 and the 4/3 to micro 4/3 adapter. It's a lot cheaper than the 7-14, but still a very sharp lens.

That Olympus 7-14 is bloody ASTONISHING, though. I use a 510 and I'm constantly amazed by this lens.

I also have that raynox adapter for my HV30 (55 mm thread in my case). I wonder how bad the light loss on the GH1 using the stock lens will be and if there will be any vignetting.

Seems the filter thread for the stock 14-140 lens is 62mm... so I think our 55mm Raynoxes are out of the question. Maybe with a stepdown ring... but I suspect the edges will be cropped.

The Peleng, though a fish eye could be a solution. On Four Thirds it's fairly comparable to the ZD 8mm from what I've seen.

Absolutely, this could be the wide lens to beat on the GH1.

I checked and you are absolutely right about the GH1 thread size! I guess using my raynox is out of the question :(. Even with a step up ring the vignetting would be horrible, I would have to zoom in to get rid of it, loosing the wide angle I wanted.

I've got a Raynox Pro 0.66x wide angle adapter which I used on the HV20. Although the fixing thread diameter is too small for the stock lens of the GH1, I though I would experiment with it on a manual prime lens at least.

Remember that the Raynox becomes pointless if your lens is longer than 21mm, since 21mm*0.66 = 14mm...

Unless you are looking for lens speed, but generally you are right.

Yeah, I would be hugely surprised if the Raynox 55mm didn't vignette heavily on a 62mm filter size, but the 14-45mm G1 kit lens (which will be available with the GH1 in a few weeks in Japan) uses 52mm threads..The markup for this lens compared to a body only is very low, so even if you get the 14-140 kit, you should be able to snatch one of these (VERY sharp) kitties for around $100. IOW this might be the cheapes way of getting a 18.5mm equivalent lens to work, but you'll lose some of the 'HD' goodies of the 11-140.

Raynox does make some fisheyes on 62mm mounting threads, but I don't know what these cost. I have an Oly 08b, which has proved to an overkill compared to my Raynox .66, but in this case the 62mm threads could prove valuable. It's quite a lump (340g/12oz) but this might be the trick to keep the continuous iris and the tracking AF.

This lens should autofocus during photo mode right?
And probably give manual focus lcd magnification assist?
If so then this is it.

The 14-45mm lens that comes with the G1, and is reported to possibly be an option with the GH1 in japan, has front threads of 52mm. Could be a good candidate for one of these add on wide-angle adapters and would definitely be cheaper than other wide angle lens options.

Hmmm. I have a decent Century Optics wide angle adapter that I used on my Sony VX-1000 back in the day. I'm pretty sure the thread size is 52mm. So I wonder if it would work screwed onto the GH-1 kit lens.

My biggest concern would be whether or not the added weight would put too much stress on the camera mount without rails. It's the full-on zoom through type adapter and is kinda heavy. Also, does anyone know if such an adapter--made for a DV camera--could even resolve 1080 lines? So many questions. I can't wait to get my hands on a GH-1.

so has anyone discovered a wide angle adapter that works well with the kit lens zoomed all the way wide (14mm?)

That would be a no.

And what about wide angle adapter for Panny 20mm pancake lenses?

There was a thread a while back where someone posted good results with the 20mm.

This Zeikos 72mm wide-angle adapter works with the Olympus 14-45mm Mark II zoom lens:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EM9JZA/ref=oss_product

Using the adapter with the zoom set at 14mm, it's about a 10mm field of view without significant vignetting. The 72mm adapter diameter is wide enough to handle most any handheld lens, but I haven't found an 82mm lens hood suitable for a 10mm focal length...
