If you can convert your existing AVCHD to a lossless format. I recommend mpeg_streamclip to remove pulldown. I used it last night and it worked great.

Yeah +10 for mpeg streamclip, couldn't live without it. Didn't realize that it could handle AVCHD though.

It doesn't, I think he meant convert to lossless format and them remove pulldown with streamclip, but not sure. I've tried to get multiple .MTS files to open in mpeg streamclip, but none are recognised, even though the manual says they should be.

Correct. It's a few steps, but it works. I used AVSconverter to convert my AVCHD to lossless, then used MpegStreamclip to remove pulldown. It's expedient.

So what settings do you use?

What about MXF? If I convert AVCHD to MXF, is it lossless? I normally do things in Edius and it works great with almost any format, but MXF is super...

Try this link. I downloaded the AVCHD to MFX transcoder but haven't used it yet. It is free. Try it and let me know. I also use Edius with the MFX files.

I've been pumped up for this camera for a few weeks now, and since I was saving up to get a DVX100B (which is only sold at one place in Nova Scotia, that I could find, and they told me they wanted over $4100 for it, can you believe that?!) but buying this camera at half the price only makes sense to me right now.

My dilemma: I have a budget of about $2,000 after purchasing the camera and I desperately need to update my computer, even playing the HD footage on youtube and vimeo is very choppy, I want to upgrade to a mac, I'd love to get a laptop too because I do a lot of work over the summer at festivals around the maritimes and being able to send off footage during the actual event is a big bonus, is there anybody out there editing on one of the new macbooks (not macbook pro) that finds the computer is great for handling the 720/60p footage? Or even the 1080p (which I don't plan on using much, but it would be good to have the option).

Thanks guys, this website is the best, I didn't ask this question any where else because you guys really know your s*it!

My laptizzy is one of the original MB pro's, it handles these files okay, if not lightning fast. Don't know if that helps.

Does your budget include buying the camera? If so, forget about a MAC, that only leaves you with $500 left. That might get you a mouse. I'm totally liberal when it comes to OS, I just find MACS are a bit more expensive for what you get. However, look around and you'll see that in the Intel world you can have a MAC and a PC all for the cost of a PC.

well no i have 2g's for just the computer alone, and unfortunately they're projecting the MSRP for the GH1 in canada at 1899, plus 15% tax, that's almost 2200 (we also pay a small environmental handling fee on electronics). but yeah, i'm thinking about getting the new macbook 13" with the 2.4ghz duo core processor, of course i'll have to wait till i get the camera so i can test out the footage, or download a sample off the internet to test
