Just curious, has anybody tried this combination out yet? I've seen some beautiful work done on Flickr but I have yet to see much video done with this lens.

I've never even heard of that lens. But the thought of using that sucker at night makes my bank account weep for its life.

The Canon f/0.95 is actually a rather cheap lens, and a true gem for the money!

There are some things to consider when using this lens with the GH1...

There are two versions of the 50mm f/0.95. One is made for the Canon 7 rangefinder bodies and the other is a "TV" lens. Both lenses are optically the same, however the "TV" lens aren't designed for the Canon 7 rangefinders and loses functionality when mounted to them (not much of a concern for a GH1 user).

What's important to consider for mounting these lenses on a GH-1 is the mount. The f/0.95 is designed for the unique external mount of the Canon 7 so you won't find any adapters for it.

There are two solutions for this, and they are both relatively simple:

1.) The first is to use a C-mount adapter. The "TV" lens came with a C-mount adapter (which also acted as a rear lens cap), and the same adapter also fits the normal lens as well; the adapter usually goes for around $60-100. From there you can just use the C-mount to µ4/3rds adapter to use this lens on your GH-1.

2.) The second method is to have a converted lens. The popularity of this lens means that there are a lot of Leica M mount conversions for this lens. The converted lenses tend to be more expensive online, but you can have any lens converted to an M-mount for around $150-200. From there you just use an M-mount to µ4/3rds adapter to fit the lens on your GH-1.

There are stores like this that do conversions :

We'll see some footage with this lens eventually...

In the mean time I did a head to head of some 25mm F0.95 lenses that I own (http://forum.getdpi.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7389) on the G1 @ 16:9. They are lots o fun:

Upshot, which of those 25mm .95s do you prefer? I might be looking for something in that length for darkened room baby photos and obviously a lot of baby portraiture coming up. How are they to work with on the G1/GH1?

It's almost impossible to find but I prefer the soligar. I recently picked up the Kodak Cine Ektar 25mm F1.4 which is better @1.4 for sure and there is my Switar 26mm F1.1 which is also very very nice.

Out of all the 25mm c-mounts I've amassed... I'd put them in this order:
1. Macro Switar 26mm F1.1 (full sens coverage @ 16:9, Joy to use, exceptional performance, lovely bokeh)
2. Cine Ektar 25mm F1.4 (full sens coverage @ 4:3!!, easy to use, great performance, butter bokeh)
3. Soligar 25mm F0.95 (vigettes but my best @ F0.95 (from what I've seen the Berthiot 25mm F0.95 beats it though), little challenge to handle but not bad, great performance, decent bokeh)
4. Schneider Xenoplan 25mm F1.9 (full sens coverage @ 4:3!! easy to use after I did some modifications (focus grip), wonderful performance, so so bokeh)

It's tough... they all have characteristics to like. For example I have a Taylor Hobson Filmo 25mm F1.9 that gives the flattest field I've ever seen (full sensor coverage to boot) with a wonderful sharp vintage feel... but it' s really tough to handle and flares like crazy (which can be cool in it's own right!)

The 2 c-mount lenses I have both vignette:
Angenieux 12-120 mm 1:2.2 covers maybe 2/3 of the sensor
Cosmicar 12.5mm 1:1.4 almost full sensor coverage

I am still hunting for the right wide angle lens with 1:1.something below 4
any tips in the c-mount range that really cover the sensor?

How does this compare to the canon/nikon 1.4 50mm aside from the higher aperture opening? i hear the 1.4 is more sharp, but they're all in the same price range...sorta.

So to get this straight, you'd have to get the TV version then a CMount adapter then a C to GH1 adapter?

Do you know if the Schneider Xenon 25/.95 at B&H for CCTVs covers fully? I see it on the Google Docs list but so far I'm not sure I've seen anyone confirm or deny it's ability to be easily adapted and its sensor coverage. I've been doing a ton of research over at getdpi and rangefinders but I really want a lens that covers the sensor completely. If I'm going to start buying expensive lenses that need adapting (Angenieux, Switar, Canon .95, etc) then I might as well just buy the PanaLeica 25/f1.4.

I thought I'd really get into the adapted manual lenses thing but if they're not really covering the sensor then I'm not sure I feel like futzing around with it and getting machining done. Not knocking what you're doing. It looks like a blast, but I'm really looking for a more complete solution for a "normal" fast lens (ie, 20 to 25mm) for this camera.

Does anyone know about the Panny 20/f1.7? Is it just not going to happen?

It's a very different lens compared to other Nikon/Canon primes. Its very soft wide-open, almost 'dreamy', which is fitting since they called it the 'Dream lens'. When stopped down its fairly sharp, but I wouldn't say as sharp as the modern Canikon lenses. The whole point of this rather large chunk of glass is that lens exceeds the perception of the human eye when used in available light photography. There are some samples Flickr samples posted previously in this thread, I would go look at that to see what type of photos to expect from this lens.

You have three-choices:

1.) Get the TV-lens (which came with a C-mount adapter). Then use a µ4/3rd to C-mount adapter to mount it on your Panasonic.

2.) Get the normal lens for the Canon 7 rangefinder, and buy a C-mount adapter that fits this unique mount and turns it into a C-mount, then use a µ4/3rd to C-mount adapter to mount it on your Panasonic.

3.) Buy either lens, and convert it to a Leica M-mount (links in my previous post) and then use a µ4/3rd to Leica M-mount.

I just got my first 0.95 (Xenon 17/0.95) and can't wait to try it out on the GH-1. I doubt it covers the frame so it'll be a 2x crop thing but still sounds like fun.

Question is, which ones to go after next?

Navitar's got a 25 and 50 for decent prices direct purchase.

The Canon is pretty expensive and so is the Angenieux.

Is the extra cost justifying any performance gains? At Wide Open apertures?

I've got the Navitar 50mm F0.95 adapted for my GH1. By far my favorite lens! It's sharp wide open, and has a really smooth look. I shot a lot of the night scenes in my questfest film "nightlight" with it... keep a look out.

Where'd you get the 50 from?

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but how have Canon made a lens which has more light exiting the back than entering the front? I thought f1 was 100% light transmission , f1.4 one stop less etc. So how does f0.95 work?

DonalDuc
07-08-2009, 04:41 AM
No, it isn't so - look ... 100% light NEVER comes out! glass eats light :D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aperture

http://666kb.com/i/bagu383djg2es7azz.jpg

or

N = ( f/2 ) * sqrt ( pi / A )

or

radius (aperture) = f / (2*N) = 5 / (2*0.95) = 2.6316 ... radius of max. aperture

then N = (5/2) * sqrt(pi / (r² * pi)) = 2.5 * sqrt (1/r²) = 2.5 * sqrt(1/2.6316²) = 0.95

do you have to do a modification for the rear part of the lens ? Or is it OK directly on the C mount adapter ?

what's the widest and fastest lenses out there?

wide+1.4 = low light with ENOUGH DOF so you can get more than an eye lash in focus.

26mm 1.1 switar is good example...

Anything under 20mm and 1.8 ish? Not even sure that's possible but is there a 16mm 1.8 (most likely no)

effectively no much swirl such as my Cosmicar. I've bought this Cine-NIKKOR 300$ on Ebay, wich is more expensive than my 20$ 25mm Cosmicar, but less expensive than (a friend of) mine 1000$ Switar :)

GH1 and Canon TV 50mm f/0.95 with c-mount is not a happy couple. C-mount piece from the lens is much wider than the pocket it supposed to land in to the adapter. Now it works as a macro lens, longest focus distance is only up to 2 meters. And if something is off focus with this lens - it really is...

I dont like the idea, that I have to modify original c-mount from the lens... But it would been nice to focus infinity as well.
