I am looking to find a cheap or even free older version of Adobe After Effects to somehow get into the hands of a 20 year old I am mentoring. I already own AE CS3. But this lad wants to study hard this next year and learn motion graphics, how to do things like Andrew Kramer shows at videocopilot.net, etc. and hopefully change his life from working at Taco John and living in a rat's nest to getting some sort of job in the field of motion graphics, VFX. He has the trial version AE but that is good for 30 days. So I thought I would check here and see if anybody has an older version of AE collecting dust to sell cheap or give away?

Randall, I did the same thing when I was starting out. I found an old copy on Amazon, and if the lad is only going to be using it for learning, an Academic version will be half the price, even for already reduced older versions.

If you can't find anything like that, I may be able to help out with a Standard version of 6.5.

I found a std 6.0 version on ebay that just went up for auction. What would something like that be worth, given that 6.0 goes back a few versions and is from I think 2003 or 2004, and CS4 just came out? What would be a reasonable maximum bid I should make on that ebay 6.0 CD? Or Matt would you be willing to sell you 6.5 standard (PM me if that is a possibility).

I wouldn't pay more than $50-100 for versions 6.5 and earlier. Maybe $150-250 for 7. You can buy CS4 for $350 with the Academic Discount.

But, that's me, when you can get the current version for only $350 it makes it harder to pay more for older used versions, even though they are commercial licenses.
