When your render is done? If so there is an option in the preferences

thanks, i did search through the preferences, and the manual is here, along with the other CS3 manuals .. quite a collection :)
however, for some reason, i have not located this.
the option seems to have moved from where it was in an earlier version.
if anyone could direct me to the individual preference menu to remove the 'chime sound', that would be greatly appreciated.

A quick Google (www.google.com) search turned up this (http://www.toolfarm.com/tutorials/rndrsnd.html)...

thanks for the search.. i have searched many times for the individual preference menu to switch off the chime,
however the idea of modifying the application itself is quite novel. i like it. :)
these instructions seem to indicate that the only way to switch off the chime sound is by modifying AE in a simple yet somewhat invasive way..
"
Copy your After Effects Application. If you mess up and you want to go back to the "prrrrllling", you will still have the original and won't have to reinstall AE.
Export the sound file you want to use from Quicktime as a System 7 sound. Open this file with ResEdit, open the SND resources, copy the ID 9 resource. Get ResEdit (ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Tool_Chest/Developer_Utilities/ResEdit_2.1.3/) here.
Open your AE application copy.
Find the SND resource and double click.
Paste ( command-V) your new sound. Delete the original resource with ID 128."
i would really prefer to just find the menu in After Effects Preferences, giving direct access to switch off the Chime sound (or "Prrrrllling" sound as described in previous quote). i used to know where it was, and now the option seems to have moved to an undisclosed location.
if the preference is not available any more, then changing the program's assets would be the next step, imho.

Todd Kopriva from Adobe, a senior product manager for AE, said this:
There is no way to modify the volume of only the render chime.
This is from the Live Docs for CS3 in the comments of this section (http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/8.0/help.html?content=WS3878526689cb91655866c1103a4f2d ff7-79f3.html)
Is there a particular reason you want to turn this off?

Chime is often too loud, and a distraction (in my humble opinion).
cheers for the quote from mr Kopriva..
i wonder if there is a way to reduce the volume of *every alert sound from AE,
rather than "only the render chime"..
im searching google about this,
currently, have not found any info about changing the overall AE alert sound volume.

it appears that adobe does not provide a way to change any alert sound in AE creative suite.
the workaround tutorial that describes how to change the SND resource is for After Effects versions 5 and upwards..
however, the article here:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/QuickTime/INMAC/SOUND/imsoundmgr.2d.htm
describes how SND resources are deprecated from os x 10.5 upwards, and that core-audio is now used .
this may explain why there is no SND resource alert sound to replace in the AE cs3 application package.
