View Full Version : 1080@24 and 720@60...This time with the RIGHT shutter speeds

In a few moments I'll be uploading the latest tests
There are 3 series of tests 'donated' by chicago
1. 1080@24 - Shutter 1/50
2. 720@60 - Shutter 1/60
3. 720@60 - Shutter 1/125 (that's as close as we get to 120)
Shot under controlled, if not ideal, lighting... Everything was in manual...film: standard. Please check the text doc for the individual shot details (there are 31 files).
The reason I included the 1/125 was for those that want to see how slow mo turns out...the subject matter is not blindingly exciting but there are lots of colours and different sorts of textures as you will see. The very last shot was some disgraceful pans for those interested in the slow mo...I was just abusing the camera at that stage.
As per, uploaded direct from the cam to you. I hope you ladies and gents find these useful.
Cheers,
Sam.
Daniel L rocks - have to make that my signature I think

Cool!!!
720-60p seems like the way to go. Drops just fine into a 24p time line and with 1/60 shutter looks close enough to 24p 1/48 to make me happy. PLUS you have killer slomo with ANY of your footage anytime you feel like it!

Hi sonicstates,
thanks for the new footage, downloading it now...
just one question:
what is CU in the file descriptions?
File:00003
1 CU rack focus @ lowest ISO @ 1080/24
F 5.7 - ISO 100 - 70mm tele for CU
thanks

Sonic, in all your footage, is Noise Reduction ON or OFF ?
downloading, hope to find compression-clean 1080p footage, since I really want to use that mode... (though building shots in the previous serie were pretty clean, only the street shots had problems).

You can adjust the amount of NR you want. In this footage mine was set to 0. I haven't got my head around all this menus yet (I am a slow learner) but I think the footage you will see after downloading will be free of any "camera interference".
Let me know what you think.
Cheers,

Well, it's a bit static but that 1080p footage looks pretty clean to me. What do you others think about it ?

Pardon my AVCHD ignorance. I've never worked with AVCHD before, and this is the first time I've downloaded Sonic's file.
So, there's the Private folder. Inside that is the AVCHD folder. Inside that are three folders - AVCHDTN, BDMV, and IISVPL.
And it goes even deeper than that. Good grief! I don't know where to begin???
I'm on a MacPro. I've got FCS2 and AE CS4. I also have Premiere CS4, but I've never used it.

divide, the 1080p footage looks good to me also. I was actually going to post my disappointment in this camera...but what I am noticing is 1080p is sharp and with smooth pans you still have a nice picture. I have it in Vegas right now and on the time line as I step through it it looks very good in most of the frames (and I'm talking about the slow steady pans). I threw in some sharpness to exaggerate the effect and you can see exactly where the footage wants to fall apart. I punched the colors to make sure the codec could take it...and it looked pretty good to me. All while I was in 8bit mode.
The question I have for Sonic is...where was sharpness set in these shots? It seems that my "saved" sharpness settings that I normally use in my NLE looks overdone in the GH-1 footage. To me that is saying that the image already had a bit of sharpness added to it when it was originally shot because I get some anomalies similar to what I get when I overdo the sharpness settings in post (I'm talking serious halos etc.). Matter of fact I see the noise in the image much faster than I should. Usually that means there was just too much sharpness in the footage to begin with.
My real goal was to really push the images to see where they break in post production.

Private/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM is where the video clips are. In Vegas and I think Premiere you can just drag and drop. In FCP it's a diff story, has to be logged and captured or something like that. I've been on PC since I got into filmmaking couple of years ago so not enough experience to help, but there are a ton of goodly folks in our village that will let you know soon :)

Just place the private folder where you want untouched. Don't rename or remove files. You can create and name a folder and place the private in that or just leave it alone.
Open up final cut pro. Open log and transfer and fcp automatically finds the private file. At the top of log and transfer is a gear wheel icon you can choose to transcode in either AIC or prores. I think the rest you will easily figure out.
The 1080 24p footage after being transcoded will have to have pulldown removed in compressor or JES and there are posts on how to do this in other threads.

Sonic,
The footage was a HUGE help. You did a FANTASTIC job. These are the kind of tests that really let me know if the camera is gonna do the job for me.
Thank you so much, Sonic!
Daniel, your server is freaking fast. I had a solid 350k/sec even on my crappy DSL. Thanks, man!

No problem, happy to help. Big thanks to both SonicStates and Kholi for putting up with our requests and taking time out of the day to upload files. They really did a lot for us, without them many of us would still be in the dark.

i must say at 1600, its very useable!
I see the codec breaking up at fast pans... but i didnt notice it until i paused the movie.
but hey i think this is the best cam than whats currently out in the market.
edit:
yeah the interlace combing has an effect. subtle though but its there.

Hi sonicstates,
thanks for the new footage, downloading it now...
just one question:
what is CU in the file descriptions?
CU is Close Up - I performed these tests inline with the requests made by Chicago and others
Apefos Adapter, I didn't have a chance to do the FOV and DOF test over the weekend, sorry. As it turns out Gin was responsible for more Karaoke than shooting. Will try to get something rolling this week.

There is a mode called My Film in this camera in which you can select the level of sharpness (amongst other things). I haven't got to that level yet so the default setting was probably selected...There are 2 levels + and - . I haven't played with these yet. In the manual it says
[SHARPNESS]
[+] The picture is sharply defined.
[-] The picture is softly focused.
As time permits I'll get into it.

Thanks,,,
However I asked how to without FCP. That link is to a FCP work flow.
VLC won't ( latest version ) play back the 1080 without flashing.
So what player or whatever on intel Mac will play these clips back.......?

Finally got DSL and am loading. Thanks a lot for this effort Sonic! Giving us the possibility to try out the workflow is a major helper in the decision making ( IŽll buy one anyway)
oh and I also would like to know how to look at the files without having to run FCP on a Mac...I guess its the .MTS files right?
Just like P2LogPro maybe there is an extra app that will allow me to just look ?
thanx

The cam comes with an app which I hated but probably because I was trying to use it on my disgracefully underpowered laptop.
For just looking...you could stick the files on a card and put it in a PS3 (from what I have heard)... I'm using Edius which can view the files no prob...not sure what else can handle the .MTS file extension...I'm sure there are a plethora of options though.
The Panny website might give you more options.

I just got the latest VLC player and it plays the .MTS files just fine. Thanks again for the opportunity to learn how to deal with this PRIVATE folder and its content ( plus the nice footage)

So, I guess there are a lot of problems with FCP and our beloved GH1?
I dropped the 60p footage into a 23.97 timeline and have gotten very jerky footage.
Here are the results of my ingesting and spitting out the footage:
http://www.farfromsubtle.com/gh1
Is this just the caveat of not having a 1/48 shutter?

Wow...That's kind of a bummer. I've noticed on a few other videos and wondering why it results with a subtle jerk.

I was playing around with this footage last night and noticed that in Final Cut the compression artifacting in the the ProRes footage seems to be WAY more present than when played in Quicktime. It also looked darker in Final Cut. My assumption is that its a gamma thing, though I've never encountered gamma issues before (Working mainly with DVCPro HD).
Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this and if there are any solutions.

There are few companies/people working on remedies right now (including Mac solutions). I think things are going to become a lot smoother soon...especially as more people have access to the camera in the near future.... Hope the footage has proved useful thus far.
