I'm very sorry you guys. I didn' tmean for such terrible footage to be the first. I really wanted to see how the 720/60 > 24 played out with the masses, though.

Again, please forgive me. Organizing an actual narrative shoot is tough.

PS. I will never go handheld again on anything longer than a 35... 50 is even pushing it. My hands aren't cut out for a lightweight camera.

Sorta! But don't tell anyone. LoL.

I don't think I wass upposed to show it so limited time only.

But even that was ALL handheld. It's much easier to hold a larger camera steady than a small one, at least for me. The weight puts the work on my biceps, not my wrists.

Shooting all 1080/24 stuff today to see what I get.

Took a long time to work out the color/contrast in camera, by the way. Once it's tweaked it's pretty straight, to me anyway.

Was the swordplay stuff shot on the Red or the Panny? Either way.. man it looked flipping good.

Speaking of flipping. There's no way I'm buying a 35mm adapter now that these cams are coming out and I'm sure they'll see their sales drop off considerably. I can buy this cam for the price of an adapter... so it seems like a no brainer for me.. especially since the adapter stuff was going to be for music videos and the like.

What has your overall impression been and do you think Panny will implement the live video out? That would be so cool if they did.. and I'd also love an intervelometer built in.

When i watch this other footage from Kholi shot with an adapter, i really forget about the GH1 ..... http://www.vimeo.com/1271306
the adapter still gives a really more filmic look.

The Dragon Age piece was RED. it's just to show that handheld's a lot more plausible with a larger camera. Most of that was telephoto and just me pulling focus on Nikons. No follow focus.

Cradled or on my shoulder, mostly cradled because I'm tall.

I think I could have gotten really great results with the GH-1 in that same situation. Yeah, the camera could stand a few tweaks but overall, even as it's delivered, it's pretty damned awesome.

Kholi, were you using your DSLR rig or some other handheld support to shoot handheld?

You and Hunter and Barry have great things to say about the GH1. From what I've seen so far, footage from the Canon 5Dmk2 seems to have better color and resolution. I know there's quite a lot of variables, compression, etc. that go into putting clips onto vimeo and youtube. But it's my general surmise that the Canon footage has looked better, though I know it's more of hassle because of lack of manual controls.

Just my DSLR rig majigger. I probably won't ever go handheld beyond 50mm on this thiing without a stabilizer, though. I can do it on larger cameras no issue, but this thing is too light for me.

As far as color goes, it's all subjective at that point. Both cameras, when used properly, can put out close-to accurate color values. I've noticed the MKii give very ODD flesh tones on several occassions, and I've also seen some GH-1 footage with odd flesh tones.

It took me forever to find out how to work this thing into giving me close-to-accurate or what I was seing.

MKii resolution is awesome.

All in all, it's just a choice between the facts!

Be careful with your light sources and white balance. I would never leave WB on auto. When shooting in natural lighting keep in mind that it often has very poor CRI, mixed sources, and unbalanced color all over the place. It's a recipe for disaster.

It wasn't on auto? I never use auto wb.

Kholi, is that banding in the sky on the last shot visible in the raw footage? And kind of post filters that will smooth that out?

Kholi

The banding is from compression. Although I have seen banding indoors. Lot less apparent in raw.

I totally see what you mean. I just think that we are bridging the gap when it might not be needed. My main problem with the adapters are the size, light loss and the cost. With rods and all that.. gets pricey quickly..

Either way, its a great time to be a filmmaker.

That footage was shot with a Letus Ultimate + rods probably = $5000, not including the cost of the HVX200a. Any way you cut it, the GH1 at $1500 is a really good deal. Lots of better options out there, but as a purchase item, that's sooo cheap. Also, since the image on a GH1 goes straight from lens to sensor, it should have better Bokeh qualities than any adapter.

BTW Kholi, do you rent out your Ultimate Rig? I am shooting a comedic short early Fall with an EX3. Fully insured production, etc. Mostly indoor locations, no abuse. I have Nikons, so probably won't need your lenses, but interested.

That was kind of my initial response. This is also the first series of cams of which there will undoubtedly be many. With everyone producing better looking images, the emphasis on original and well conceived content will be even more important. When story and execution mean more than production value...

Really good man!
Makes me want to buy it...

One thing.. the song.. or rather, the band, do they have a song that's been in Naruto?

Kholi

Yeahp! In fact, they've got a lot of music floatin' around the anime world.

You remove banding by dithering, so adding any kind of noise or simulated grain will do.
