View Full Version : Sample - GH1 is no match to a AVCHD camcorder

I linked a sample file from imaging-resource.com. It is an unaltered mts sample 1280x720 60p. It shows very bad compression artefacts on high detail areas the roof, the grass, the lady's hair:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/DMCGH1/FULLRES/zvid_AVCHD_1280x720_00013.MTS

On Vimeo I saw other example where clearly GH1 can not handle highly detailed scenes. Based on these examples the GH1 is vastly inferior to recent AVCHD camcorders at half price like Canon HF10.

Download the original, at 2:20 look at grass on the GH1 it is like mud on the Sony camcorder you can see the grass blades:

My conclusion: the age of a true hybrid imaging device is not here yet!

So obviously you know exactly what the settings that .mov uploaded to vimeo were... For all we know that could have been highly compressed before uploading.

Until you look at the RAW footage out of both cameras with as close to the same settings/context as possible... Your talking like a man with paper nose-holes.

Oh an btw... Can you mount just about any lens ever made on the 'far superior' HF10?

Your talking like a man with paper nose-holes.

Never heard that expression before! (and I'm not exactly sure what it means!!!).

Good for you. I don't really care for your conclusion. It doesn't make any difference one way or another. Really.

Guys pls check the imaging-resource video! What is your opinion on the quality of that sample?

On the same imaging-resource page there is a 1920x1080 sample of the same scene. When there is a swing of the camera and the picture falls apart the grass starts to jump around. It is worse than the 720p version.

Its Ok! There is plenty of stuff showing up that looks very good. As soon as the best settings for the camera are settled, more experts people use it and more controlled shootings take place we will be able to make a final judgement. It is way too early to tell for sure but overall is looking fine.

My conclusion: the age of a true hybrid imaging device is not here yet!I wouldn't say it at all. As 5D Mark II owner, I can't confirm your statement. The hybrid imaging is there for sure. With or without manual control, 30p capture included.

On the GH1, not sure once I don't know the device. I bet with devices such as NanoFlash around, this is the year. So, not a poem but it's effectively here.

You do understand that is the lowest quality setting. Makes me want to post some really bad Red footage I have (not going to do it).

All I'll say is anyone complaining about the image quality

IT"s ALL FROM THE KIT LENS DAMMIT

You know you can change it and mount an 85mmL

Problem solved.

Just youtube "Joshua Tree"

According to Philip Bloom he shot a lot of "Joshua Tree" with the kit lens. He says he likes it a lot. The only problem he finds with it is that it is slow for low light situations. Kholi says as much. The kit lens was built especially for the video on the GH1 and for what we have seen from it is a very good one indeed. It also allows the auto focus functions to work. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it image wise.

If you are talking about Philip Blooms vid be sure to note that Joshua Tree was shot using the Zeiss Master primes AND the stock lens. Of course the $10,000 lens looks better but the stock lens did a pretty damn good job!!
Which "Image quality" are you talking about? From what I have seen and discovered with this cam, the codec is the source of many problems with artifacting. Aside from this the image quality is exceptional (again with the cavet - $1500...or in my case 123,000 yen...a steal!!!)
