hey,
I am getting geared up to start shooting a short. It will be my first experience. I will be directing moreso than DP but would still like to get input from you guys. I have 3 camera choices for the project and would like to get your input on which to use:
1. HVX200
2. JVC GY-HD200 and HD110
3. Canon XH-A1
I will be putting the Letus Extreme DOF on whichever I choose so let that influence your choice.
thanks for the input

The XH-A1 has proven an excellent adapter cam in terms of edge to edge sharpness and edge falloff ... so is very popular in our studio for adapter use.

If the tape workflow is ok, I'd use the XH-A1 with a tweaked DVXlook preset. If you need to overcrank, and want solid state workflow, use the HVX200a. Light efficiency between them is similar.

If you're considering the HVX why not just go with the HPX170?

i am not buying these cameras... these are the cameras i have at my disposal. the university owns the jvc ones, a friend has the canon, and the company i work for has the hvx...

I use the HVX at work and I own the XHA1. I actually bring my XHA1 into work a lot to use on projects because I prefer it. You can get zero noise and I agree with Dennis when he said that it is a good camera for adapter use. Plus you have so many in cam adjustments possible.

looks like the XH-A1 is the winner thus far...

The XH-A1 is the winner in my opinion. I don't believe (correct me if i'm wrong) that the HVX or the JVC has custom presets which is a major plus for me.

Although if you really like tapeless, go for the HVX

still not a big fan of the p2 workflow... i don't have a powerbook and i don't have any way of offloading other than taking a pc laptop with me and i just kinda hate it still

Then if you have a spare $700-800 laying around, go out and get a Firestorm FS-4. The newer one is like $2000 and the FS-4 is way better (in my opinion).

It avoids the p2 workflow entirely (or so i assume :Drogar-Thinking(DBG )

I'd go with the HVX200. Is it a 200a?

Fairly surprised to see everyone choose the A1. Good stuff.

i used the firestore a few times with the campus jvc gy200u and i was very upset that it did not wrap some of the movie files correctly... that plus i hate to have another thing hanging off the camera actually... if i use the hvx, it would be p2 with some sort of laptop offload just to stay as simple of a setup as possible... thanks for the input though guys... this is great... sad to see that the ole jvc has no votes...
