Have they said whether they definitely intend to sell a body-only version at some point? I might wait on that. Have a friend who's probably going to get it when it first comes out, so that could tide me over.

Kinda been waiting to hear the same thing, regarding body-only. At least we now know what Panasonic meant when they said "under $1500". Still pretty excited, though!

I think when panasonic said "under $1,500" they meant that they haven't determined the price yet, and J&R is just speculating on the price, they know they will be selling it for less than $1,500 but they don't want to take an order and then have to raise the price-- easier to refund the difference.

I think this is just a speculative product page and J&R doesn't know any more than we do.

All a pre-order is on their site is, "we'll email when it's available".

No, it's a legit preorder. You submit your billing information, your shipping information and your credit card number.

Which is nothing when it's only up to generate sales. That would explain why BH doesn't have one up, cause there's no official word from Panasonic when it'll be released and how much in the US.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you're saying, but the official word isn't what I was waiting for and it's certainly more than just a "we'll email when it's available". It's a "we'll send you one when it's available" What matters to me is to be as high up on the list as possible for when the first cameras come in. I've had my name on the "email me" lists for Amazon, B&H and whoever else I could find, but J&R was the first to take names and info. They say they'll be shipping them out in the order in which the pre-sales are placed and I'm going to take their word on that.

Up until very recently, getting a MKII from B&H or Amazon or wherever was a hit and miss. B&H would get a few in, they'd be available online for 20minutes and then unavailable again for weeks. This camera has more controls and is in a much cheaper price range. I have no idea if there will be 10-times as many made as the MKII, but I do not want to wait months and months to get my hands on one. Therefore, I'm happy that there's a preorder and I'm happy to be part of the generated sales for J&R.

Just received this email from Panny Canada. Hope you guys in the states have an earlier release date than the end of June. I'm worried as I'm scheduled to start a shoot early July and would definitely need time with it and the DP prior to '1st day'.

I think "end of june" means "we're planning to have it on sale in early june or late may but want to cover our butts."

Will be released in Early June, priced at $1,499.95.

May 6, 2009 – Today Panasonic revealed that the company’s video-enabled Micro Four Thirds LUMIX DMC-GH1 camera will sell for $1499.95, including a 14-140mm lens, when it ships in early June. Only the second Micro Four Thirds camera to be released, the 12.1-megapixel GH1 is largely similar to the G1 introduced in fall 2008 (reviewed here (http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Panasonic-Lumix-G1-Digital-Camera-Review--19430.htm)), but adds 1080p high-definition video recording at 24p frame rate, along with 720p recording at 60 frames per second. Unlike most digital cameras with video recording capability, the GH1 will allow zooming while shooting, thanks to an exceptionally quiet lens mechanism. Continuous autofocus is another feature not found on current video SLRs that will be available on the GH1.

Actually, according to the Press Release, it's $1,499.95, as I had mentioned in my post above.

Amazon is selling it above MSRP. Granted, it's $.04.

Pre-release pricing is always higher. I wouldn't be surprised to see this drop down a bit, if not immediately then definitely in a couple months.

Like the others have said, they only charge when they ship, so I could cancel in the next few weeks and buy elsewhere if it's cheaper. But using Amazon's CC rewards, it's like getting 3% off or $1454. I ordered it with One-Day shipping through prime, but I'm not sure that will matter. I think it's worth $4 to possibly getting it a day early.

I just talked to B&H through their live chat. Direct quote: "Unfortunately we do not have a solid arrival date from Panasonic at this time. They currently anticipate June."

Believe me. I was a little stunned too. I simply called to confirm that they would be shipping in order the pre-orders were received and if I could get a 'where am I on the list'.

The response was something like... Yes, in order. We don't have access to that info but rest assured your order is 'in order'. It looks as though a large shipment is en-route and you will be getting one from that... I'd estimate it will ship in 5-7 business days.

I just talked to J&R and they said the ETA is JULY 15th! :crybaby: This blows as I have been planning on shooting with this in June

I went ahead and placed another pre-order at Panasonic.com figuring that they should have them before anybody else, but who knows how far down I am on that list. I may end up forking over the money for a MKII for the shoot which also means having to deal with the control workarounds instead of having the true manual control with the GH1. Not happy.

I hear ya. I'm in the same boat. My shoot isn't planned 'til the first week of July but my pre-order with Vistek (in Canada) has been pushed back to the end of June. I'm getting that awful, sinking feeling. Does anybody know what the delays are? Bottleneck in production or, hopefully, upgrading the firmware before releasing?

I'm also a J&R orderer. Oh well.

BTW, GH1 page no longer is searchable in J&R search system, but can only be reached via direct link:
http://www.jr.com/panasonic/pe/PAN_DMCGH1K/

They also have a price for the lenses separately:
http://www.jr.com/panasonic/pe/PAN_7_hy_14MM/

Hopefully that should shut up the "overpriced for DSLR (or EVIL I guess)" crowd.
Edit: Nevermind, I'm retarded. That's the new ultrawide lenses. Want!

has anyone done a pre-order on the Panasonic site yet? did they immediately charge you or do they wait until it ships?

also, wouldn't it make the most sense to pre-order directly from Panasonic? the logic being that if you order from Amazon you pay Amazon, Panasonic ships it to Amazon and Amazon ships it to you. OR you pay Panasonic and they just ship it to you. Is my logic sound here?

You can actually search it up by searching for DMCGH1 or DMCGH1K They way their search engine works takes a search for GH1 and puts you straight to the lens page instead of giving you any choices.

I have and they did not immediately charge me.

That logic makes sense to me. J&R just happened to be the first (or the first that I was aware of) to take pre-orders. Panasonic offered the pre-order a little later and I ordered one there at that point.

Right now I'm just hoping that J&R is being cautious about their shipping ETA. I'm hoping their July date isn't because they know that they're last on the Panasonic delivery list because I got in early there and got in late to Panasonic.com

I guess we'll know when we know.
