If anyone wants to host a really quick sample of Motion JPEG 720/30p I'll send you the file.

It's just a water gun showing several different colors, somewhat lowlight.

Settings:

MJPEG (HD) 720/30P
140mm @ 5.8
1/30 Shutter
ISO 100

Second Clip:

MJPEG (HD) 720/30P
55mm @ 5.6
1/50 Shutter
ISO 100

Didn't want to throw it on Vimeo because the compression is week and I haven't signed up for my Vimeo Premium Account just yet.

It's ONLY to show the Motion JPEG characteristics, and NOTHING else.

Huh, that looked better than I thought it would. The clips report different data rates - one is 19.7, one is 26.7. Is that settable?

Nah, no change in settings. Aside from shutter, focal length and iris. It's the same ISO, same HD 720/30p MJPEG setting.

720/24p MJPEG would be great!

I've notice not too many people seem interested in the MJPEG function of this camera and was wondering why that is. Looking at this and the other footage I've seen, it looks pretty good to me. And being an intraframe codec I'd assume it wouldn't have any of the motion artifacting issues. Also the workflow seems a little less cumbersome.

Just wondering if anyone has done a side by side comparison. If avchd is that much superior to mjpeg what are the benefits (other than file size i guess)?

I want to try keying mjpeg footage from this camera. I had decent results with my D90.

The image quality of the MJPEG clips above is much better than that of the D90 but I noticed that the chroma subsampling is not so key friendly. It's YUV420 according to this Mac utility: http://laurent.ettouati.free.fr/english/

The D90 has 422 as shown here:

Looks pretty good to me. Much better than the footage from my D90 project a while back.

I haven't looked at these files in a long while... butyeah, now that I'm revisiting... a 1080/24 MJPEG at a high bitrate would make this thing killer.

720/24 MJPEG @ high bitrate would be great too.

It may not be "technically" onthe level as the H264 spit out from the MKii, but I'm pretty damned sure it'd match in visual quality. Add to that the better jello control. Tsk.

Thanks for posting these Kholi. If you have time I would love to see an untouched mpeg showing a 'rack' focus throughout the range of the stock lens.

Also I noticed the files you posted have 16khz audio. Any thoughts on this? Are there different audio settings on the camera or is this dependent on what mpeg you choose?

Hey Davis,

Didn't even know you were signed up over here! haha. Unfortunately my .JP GH-1 has found a new home but as soon as I get my two new cameras I'll be happy to throw some more samples up.

As well, there are cameras shipping now so we should see some more coming out soon.

As far as the Audio goes, I hadn't paid attention to the Audio at all. =( Hopefully someone more interested in getting audio straight from the camera will post thoughts. Sorry about that!
