Hi All
This is my first post on this forum. Im looking at purchasing a new camera and ive been really impressed with the amount of other peoples questions that have been answered and also the willingness of others to share.
Any way. Im stuck between the p2 and the Z7 ,well i was untill i confirmed that the p2 cant record to tape and card at the same time. I wonder why the designers of the p2 couldnt include this function.
it would be great to be able to hand over a mini dv tape to the client at the end of the day and walk away with the dv footage on the p2 card as my own copy. But i guess it isnt gonna happen.
and the alternative just doesnt seem practical. Imagine asking your client to bring a hard drive with them and carry it around during the day so you can ofload there footage when you have used up your 1000$ p2 card.
But i read somewhere that the p2 can also dub to the tape from the p2 card, is this possible? And if so is it practical in terms of time?

You can dub a P2 card to tape. But you'll have to sit and let it playback real time. Also, it wont be HD.
Why would your client bring a hard drive? You should have your own and then you can charge them a digital storage/transfer fee or something. Then, once they have the footage in their system, they ship the drive back to you.

ya i might be able to charge them something like that. Then ill just keep the footage thats on the card and give them the hard drive to take away. I guess its a change in work flow ill have to get use to.

YES, YOU CAN RECORD TO P2 AND OUT 1394 FIREWIRE TO TAPE AT THE SAME TIME. I have done this with the HPX170. This is one of the reasons I bought the HPX170. I use a small mini-dv Pansonic camcorder.
Procedure :
Recording Mini DV via 1394 Cable with the HPX170
Remove back cover of the HPX170,
Connect the Firewire (1394) Cable to the back of the HPX170,
Connect the other side of the Firewire cable to the Mini DV Camcorder.
SETTINGS:
Mini DV Camera should be in VCR Mode, this can be selected on the
on/off/mode selection switch located on the right side of the Mini DV Camera.
HPX170 has options available in the OTHER FUNCTION SETTINGS within
the Menu while the HPX170 is in Cam Mode;
Select Menu, then Other Function Settings, then 1394 Control
1. OFF
2. EXT - When set, camera will only record to Mini DV.
3. BOTH - When set, camera will record to is own P2 Card as well as
instructing the external record function to Mini DV via the Firewire.
4. CHAIN - When set, the camera will start recording to P2 and when full will
continue via external Mini DV Tape.

Good tip NC17z. I thought I knew everything about the HPX170 but you taught me something new. Very nice.

sadude, most clients are used to making drive arrangments or accept your solution. We either prepare them that we can dump to their laptop, their drive or our drive and they can return it.
As you said, it's just a different workflow.
On rare occasion for that uneducated client that won't listen, I tell them we can just record to mini-DV and hand it off. Some actually settle on that which is fine by me. Others realize they are too behind on technology and listen to how things "should" be done now days.

Just as a caveat, you will not be able to do this type of thing in the 720p 24pN or 30pN modes, because in those modes, there is no signal output through 1394. So, anyone using OnLocation or some other live capture program/device, heads up.

Actually, this won't work with ANY HD modes; only for straight DV. The HPX (or HVX, which does the same) must have its recording mode set to DV 60i (can be /30p or /24p) - not DVCPro, DVCPro 50, or any HD mode.
Non-native HD modes output DVCProHD over FW... which the miniDV camcorder won't handle.

Yes, which is why I said "this type of thing" and mentioned OnLocation or other types of recording devices -- to differentiate it from this procedure for Mini-DV. :)
