Playing with Barry's footage!
I edited directly in Vegas, Added some Grain and tried to key out the blue background from another footage.

And Rendered in 1920x1080 - Progressive - 24fps - Mpeg2 - 25Mbps.
Looks like it removed the pulldown too. (not sure)

It's M2v file...

Here is some 720p night footage shot at iso 800 with
a 35mm 1,8 Nikkor, if the description is right.
Not so bad - given that it is downconverted to ~2 Mbit/s.
A bit too contrasty.

Best i have seen so far, the Nikkor instead of the supplied lens makes a huge difference, quite filmic would be good to see a wider lens on it.

Well it's definitely something. It shows the difference in field of view between them, and also shows the increase in image resolution on the GH1 over the D90.

What I'm left wanting to see is how they compare in rolling shutter and compression. I already know the GH1 smokes the D90 on rolling shutter, but would be nice to see how much.

Grab a RED, grab a D90, compare. That's your answer.

The D90 is the worst possible scenario.

So are you saying the GH1 has similar rolling shutter quality to Red One?

Kholi
05-05-2009, 03:48 PM
Indeed. I think the final percentage has to do with camera weight and positioning. Once it's on my little Handheld rig it's even better.

I'm sure someone will compare, but I'm pretty positive it's damned close as far as the Jello goes.

Actually, I'll go and put the Nikon mount on the RED right now.

Overwhelming it says one thing. This camera can look like $50,000 - period.

Yes there are limitations. But the damned thing is $1500. I'm picking it up with a set of FD primes and a zoom for less than the price of the 5d mkii body.

And like has been said. Sell it in a year for $750.

1. He needs to turn his AWB off (auto white balance)

2. Don't shoot it or use a polarizer, or use the shadow correction deal and some NDs.

I am sure there are a few setting combinations to take care of that. What the clips are able to show is the sharpness and DOF on that kits lens at different focal lenghts. I think is pretty good. Also it shows that the brick wall in the back looks fine. Not much, if any, aliasing there.

It's like Intelligent Exposure or something like that. Three levels that adjust the shadow area according to the brighter areas. DavidNJ's got a post about it in the Discussion area.

I can't believe this is 720p. It's so sharp in the very opening shots. Hit pause every now and then you get some fine details of the jet. Download the footage and you'll see how amazingly sharp and clean this is. Kholi is right about 720p.

No wonder the Japanese love such oversaturation in their cameras and film stocks. All of this GH1 footage is starting to make me think that is one incredibly gray island!

I just saw that mount yesterday at Adorama. I was wondering how good it was.Is called the Delkin Fat Gecko Mount and it costs $80.00. I am gonna get it now. You can put it next to the rear view mirror on the glass and get a pretty nice shot of the driver with the GH1 wide lens. Thanks Panasonic for the flip LCD.

Badass night footage!!!

That looks really nice! I wasn't too sure how good the 7-14 lens was going to look, but from what I've seen so far it could become an essential buy.

Kobe Harbor - EXTENSIVE night footage with a trio of Cannon FD lenses [and a tripod for a change]. Looks really good, but that music is guaranteed to put you right back to sleep well before you hit the 6 min mark.

Pardon if somebody already posted this - there's a lot of threads here - but dpreview just put up some nice samples:

Can't wait until some of you cowboys light up some night exterior or interior scenes. This daytime stuff is nice, but not necessarily cinematic.

This one should be called something like "Ode to Peacock"... lovely footage by same person who did the flamingo vid. Needless to say the Vimeo conversion is a pixelated mess, but the hefty 250 meg download is kinda worth it for the shot starting at .53

There are no stated settings or lens specs, but the info for the previous vid was: "LUMIX GH1 720p W/ Canon FD300mm/F2.8, edited with iMovie", so maybe same.

I know peacocks are naturally colorful and all, but this looks graded to me.

Wonder if he forgot to remove pulldown on a clip @ 1:40?

Looks fantastic and love the detail. Must be amazing on a 1080 TV.
