I want to achieve a look in some scenes of my upcoming short film I will do this summer, a look something like when Frodo puts on the ring and suddenly the world around him is sort of b&w, out of focus, blurs in and out and is 'windy', etc.. Any ideas how I would accomplish this? The scene will be with some actors in a wooded pine forest. Any help or ideas greatly appreciated.

Simple:

Make it b&w, out of focus, blurry, and 'windy', etc..

Ha!

Actually, they used real elements of fire as mattes for both displacement and compound blurs. These were then applied on top of the footage, giving it the "tearing" look. They then used masks to allow you to see certain parts of the subject (Frodo's face) with a high feather. Then everything was color corrected, graded, and such.

Thank you, interesting. So as far as filming on set, I can pretty much just film the scenes normally, and the trickery (special effect I want to achieve) will come about in post? Just want to be sure I do not need to plan for fancy green screening on set (difficult since this is to be filmed in the woods, a forest, although I could do it if needed).
