Does the AVC-Intra 50 codec allow for full pixel HD image recording at 1920 x 1080 on the HPX 300, or is that only possible in AVC-Intra 100?

avc50 is 1440x1080
avc100 is 1920x1080

Correct. Plus AVC-I50 is 4:2:0, whereas AVCI-100 is 4:2:2. Use 100 whenever possible; use 50 for when you need the space savings.

When I shot my tests for the beach piece http://www.vimeo.com/3798041 there are a few AVC Intra 50 shots thrown in there, I just wanted to see what it looked like.

They look fundamentally the same but yes, they are not full raster or color sampling. I wouldn't ever use it on a real shoot unless I was desparate for space and couldn't dump what I had already shot.

Okay so all the answers are right, I am curious as to how you are thinking you want to use it. And how does the prefilter affect your production.

Best,

Jan

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the inquiry. I'm in the process of trying to decide whether or not to purchase the HPX 300 and work in P2. I'm planning to use the camera for short and long form HD documentary work with the goal of distribution through television broadcast (primarily PBS) and/or over the web. Most of my work will be one-man band ENG style. So, for TV broadcast I'm interested in high quality HD, but am wondering if the difference between 1440 X 1080 & 1920 X 1080 is meaningful or not. I'm also weighing the cost and capacity of the P2 cards, since I like the flexibility of being able to shoot a lot without worrying about constantly dumping footage off to a laptop. I prefer to unload the cards at the end of the day. I'm also looking at the xdcam EX3, but I like the better form factor of the HPX 300.

Hi,

So the quality of the compression of AVC-Intra 50 would be a little better than the compression from the EX3 XDCAM EX, in that it is I Frame. It actually holds its own up against the XDCAM HD 422. Keep in mind that these two Sony Codecs are long GOP and mpeg2 , the AVC-Intra Codec is MPEG4, H-264. The top 5 codecs in the H.264 family are all I frame.

Hope that helps,

Jan

i had seen some phenomenal footage of SONY 1/2" PDW335 1440x1080 MPG2 compression it was amazine. SO i guess the AVC50 might give us great footage too :D

Can we get to download AVC50 @ 50i or 60i RAW footage to view on our HD monitors !
