I like the look of the HV30 and was thinking of getting one. I was going to get the DVX100b, but after seeing crank, and looking at vimeo and youtube footage, I really like the look of the HV30 just fine, and it costs a lot less than the DVX100b. I looked at HV20's but they aren't really that much less expensive than the Hv30, so you might as well get the Hv30.
How is hte jello factor in the HV30? I shoot hand held a lot and after seeing a video on youtube of extreme jello effect I was concerned about this. I know it's because of a rolling shutter, etc, etc. Just wondering how bad it is.
Adn two, how is hte mic that comes with the HV30? There's no XLR input, so it's either onboard mic, put in an XLR adapter (which kinda defeats the purpose of getting a lesser expensive camera), or use something like the rode video mic.

the mic on the camera works well but if you're shooting anything other then home videos then I'd suggest getting a legit microphone setup. A lot of people use the rode videomic but I tend to stay away from a mic that mounts on the camera since it picks up a lot of operator/camera noise which totally scream out amateur...

I've just sold my DVX100a & bought a HV30, here's my observations so far..
The "Jello effect" or Rolling Shutter as it's really known as is a problem, but so far for me has only been a problem with vibrations not movement. I short a short film using my car mount & the footage suffered from rolling shutter. You can see the movie here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEPz3KqjIMM)
The oboard mic is good for recording ambience, just like most onboard mics, it can pick up the tape noise on the camera though, so don't pump up the gain too much.
When i used my DVX100 i had to use a convertor to make my mic have an XLR plug, so i no longer need this as i just plug straight into the mic jack. Also if i mount the mic on the hot shoe, it isn't in the frame either, so bonus there.
All in all i love the camera, it has it's flaws, but so does the DVX100 in my opinion. At the end of the day the money you save on the HV30 can be put to good use buying extras like the DOF adapter i got.
Hope that helps dude.

A directional mic doesn't pick up the noise on my HV30
