I posted about that Nexto drive the other day but I don't understand how it can read P2 or SxS cards as they are not listed in the specs but they show the cards in the picture on the website. Seems a bit shady.

maybe it interfaces with the usb port on the 200/170 and acts as a host, I can't see a PCMCIA solt on that thing

EDIT:

Found this:
OTG Backup allows you to connect any USB device (Camcorder, card reader, PSP, PMP, digital camera without the PC. Just connect using a USB cable

Below is excerpt of mail from Nexto DRIVE.

" To answer your questions:

1. By using a P2 to express card adpater you may insert the P2 card into the Nexto NSV2500. We have a P2 card with adapter here at the booth (C11741) which we are demonstrating

2. With the Browse feature on the Nexto, you can bring to screen thumbnails of each clip. By selecting a clip you can preview it on the 2.4" screen.

3. I will find out about this issue today ( E & A series) and respond this evening

4. Yes the drive is user swappable. The Nexto NSV2500 accepts 2.5" SATA drives and will recognize a drive size upto 2 terrabytes. The units ship with a 1 year warranty which includes the drive enclosed. Please note this warranty is voided if the user changes hard drives during the warranty period. I also want to mention that the Nexto NSV2500 will recognize SATA SSD cards for its internal memory.

Sincerely,

Barry Morrill

I feel this drive could posibly be a great price saving for all P2 users (if its any cheaper than P2 gear etc ... it should be cox it dont sport fancy features like P2 gear etc)! We dont need to spend mega bucks on P2gear etc. We can use it just like we use other Cf card copiers. i had earlier mentioned about such a possibility of any drive but was not sure if it would do a preview of P2 RAW files. But this amazing drive seem to copy & read & preview all P2 card content.

I am really excited !

Well that's a huge improvement over the last time I saw it. That's pretty awesome, especially if they're saying they have a working model with a P2 card right now.

What would be ten times more awesome is if you didn't have to use the goofy adapter, if they'd just put a PCMCIA slot on the thing in the first place.

But, yeah, heck, this becomes the "new P2 Store"...

I too was asking them the same thing. BUT yeah a very handy & cost effective P2 store :D

Sweet, that could be really handy as many of us miss the old P2 store. Would you use a Duel adapter or ??

Hi I am sitting at NAB right now with the NVS2500 about 5 feet away! The answer is "YES"! By using an ExpressCard to CardBus adapter you can copy onto the Nexto. We've done it! And we stopped at Panasonic and A and E both work on Nexto. The price right now is estimated to be $1500.00. The unit is planned to be released in July, 2009.

I am with the President now. He says if demand happens there will be a P2 slot in the next gen due out in 2010. Let me know your thoughts

Well, 2010 is too late cox most of your prospective buyers may have bought what they might use for Data Dump. I gues you guys should plan a P2 based NextoDrive very soon ! It shall only help a faster & greater volume sales.

Can we get a lesser capacity HDD drives as option.
Can we hook any external drive to NextroDrive to allow greater space for p2 card offloading/dumping

BarryFM:

If you have pull at Nexto, I totally agree with Big Brother and with what many others are saying. There are no other non-Panasonic solutions on the market for dumping P2 cards besides a laptop. If they made a version of this with a large drive of say 500GB or larger with the PCMCIA slot and a sure fire way to verify files, I think that the product will sell quite well, especially if it is marketed to news orgs, documentarians and event shooters. Even though we have very reasonable P2 card prices, 500GB for $1,500.00 is untouchable with cards.

The Panasonic units are great but many users cannot addord the $4 to $6k needed to purchase one.

This is a great marketing opportunity to sell a lot of units for them.

True, but Sonnet has something interested to ingest easier to laptop and desktop:

but it cannot beat the utility & portabilyt of Nexto Drive for field dumping of P2 cards :D cox it still needs a computer &power to run :badputer:

so for now we need Nexto Drive with P2 slot !

NVS 2500 is apparently available now, it's got a custom P2 adapter that ships with it, that plugs into the SxS slot. So, yes, one device that can offload Red/CompactFlash, AVCHD/SD/SDHC, SxS, and P2.

Abel Cine Tech carries them.

Looks like about $2,000 for the 500GB version.

500Gb drive sounds great. However I already have more partitions than availible drive letters on my camera USB powered portable HDD that I export cards to.

This is less of an issue on Mac's but is a PITA on Windows PC's as some partitions do not appear and have to be manually assigned via disk manager prog.

How does the Nexto handle it?

Also haven't looked into this device yet, but will it record a 1394 stream from cam?

I've had one of the NVS2500 since pre-beta days and now am free to talk about it. It comes with a P2 adapter and handles CF, SDHC, SxS-- anything you can throw at it. The current firmware does not allow preview of AVC-I files, but it will play back DVCPRO HD, HDV, XDCAM. AVC-I will follow. Has SATA interface for fast transfer to editing computer. Interesting product.

Ok nothing great about it much though. Now that you have it would it be nice for use for offloading JVC HM700 type SDHC cards ... i wonder why JVC's SDHC 16GB cards werent readable on other mass storage recorder used for Photography offloads on fields from SD/CF cards...

Perhaps Ned can answer, but by first guess and from experience with my prior Nexto, I'd say that it doesn't do the partition thing at all. It probably just creates a new folder for each offload.

Also haven't looked into this device yet, but will it record a 1394 stream from cam?
Almost unquestionably not, but Ned can confirm or deny.

That's pretty wild that it'll actually play back DVCPRO-HD streams on its screen, I didn't expect that at all.

nsoltz

Does not record a stream from the camera. It is strictly an off-loading device and now with the 2500, it is both a preview and an offloading device.

It creates a separate folder for each download, if that's what your question is.
