i was wondering is this hard drive might work as a DTD alternative.

No, from what I see, it only plays back video files to your TV that are transferred to the drive from your computer over a USB connection. It is not a stand alone recorder.

looks like it, but they only record composite signal in mpeg format, not firewire (DV), so editing might not be optimal. First one isn't very portable and both require AC power though I'm sure you could run it off batteries somehow.

I was reading the review for the second device, and it seems like you can change the hard drive. Is there a way to change it and have, instead of a USB, have a Firewire 400 port? The other thing is it says it only records mpeg, so the drive is compressing the video while recording, there have to be a way to set it (I have no clue how) without compressing the info.

Am I totally wrong?
