I have an HPX-170...was just wondering the difference in quality between using the
lex standard acromat vs one optimized for hpx/hvx.
Thanks.

i think one fixes the CA caused by the camcorders lens.

the main thing is corner to corner sharpness is supposed to be much improved. My stock one is pretty bad but I may sell it anyway. Same boat as you but I am buying a 5D MKII for shallow depth of field artsy stuff and will just use the 170 for "normal" shoots where shallow depth of field isn't needed.
I really do look at shallow DOF as an "effect", you sure as heck don't need too much of it or it looks ultra lame.

Yooni, do some searching on this forum. There are multiple posts, one of which I added detailed screen grabs of rez charts before and after the upgrade. For me, didn't notice much of a difference. E2E sharpness was quite good with the old achromatte and marginally better with the new one. The main difference was that the new achromatte locked in tighter to the threaded ring, it was a completely unexpected side effect. This was both a blessing and a curse. Had to zoom in further (curse) reducing camera aperture slightly, but the GG was definitely locked in more parallel to the image sensor (blessing) ensuring E2E sharpness.
I'd say its worth it, unless you don't have the budget or you don't use your setup to make money.

Thanks for the quick responses...yeah I'll take a look at those screen grabs. If it looks noticeably better, I may go the extra mile.
Oh and another thing...the HVX optimization is the same as HPX? Or did an HPX one come out?

Its the same, I already asked Letus last year if they were going to do a special 170 achromat and they said no, the EX1/HVX200 is adequate.

Which means a step-up(down?) ring I believe.
I am trying the standard kit, it's bad I will upgrade later.

I belive that the hvx is 82mm and the hpx is 72mm...so you will need a step-down
ring.
What do you mean when you say it's bad...you're using the lex with standard acromat
and not satisfied with the quality? What lenses are you using?

Just email them ahead of time and tell them what you need. you can get the upgrade and still get 72mm threads... no need for a step down. I just set that up. I posted some footage in the screengrabes/footage section with my lex (with upgrade) and HPX.

Sorry typo, I meant "if it's bad I will upgrade later."

Is it true that the ex-1 and hpx-170 optimization use the exact same achromat?

Yep.
