im going for a bit of quanity over quality kinda deal. dumb idea. if this is your hobby, maybe. if this is your work. dont scrimp. YES there are a ton of highly functional, off-brand products out there. but considering the amount saved here by the risk and the time spent looking around. just buy what you trust from whom you trust.

if you cant afford the $200 or so difference in price, you probably didnt really NEED the item to begin with.

Ive purchased many batteries in the past few years. I cant stress how much better it is in the long run to get good batteries! Good batteries will last years, bad ones will last months. Some of the cheap once i've been asked to purchase don't even properly fit in the camera, its crazy.

I know this may sound crazy, but I bought 2 batteries from ebay for my Canon XL2 for $40 each. I even got a free charger out of it and I've owned these batteries for 5 years now and they still hold a great charge.

I've used the Ebay batteries for my HVX, and my old DVC30, for years now, not one problem. I plan to buy more in the next month just to have because they are nice for a great price. Good luck

The dvxuser batteries have done exceptionally well for me. I don't have experience with "Ebay batteries" but the idea of stockpiling not-so-good batteries is a not-so-good idea.

Whenever you leave your work station and start to film your subject - you'll want to avoid playing battery roulette. This is especially true for documentary filming where losing the shot means no second chance. Stick with reliable equipment (and you can find reliable equipment on ebay afterall) . The amount of hours you save yourself from battery juggling will make the experience less stressful.

I think itīs mor a matter of sheer luck.

I got a fist full of HVX batteries from Ebay (about 30 Euro each).

All of them but one work exactly the same way like the original Panasonic for 2 years now.
Even in cold weather.

The one that did not work (drained super quick) was exchanged under waranty.

But I also heard about bad experiance from other guys.
Seem it depends on the manufacter or even the bulk you got.

By the way, a friend had a original Panasonic battery swollen up last week.
So it can happen to them too.

I have had good luck with the Ebay batteries (if it has "Battery" printed on it in giant letters, that's it). The fit is slightly looser, but the connection is always fine. About 80-90% of the capacity of the OEM Panny battery after two years. But you can buy 5 or more for the price of the original. Maybe not for people who make their living with the camera, but great for us income supplementers.

Well since I live in Shenzhen, China where 99.9% of the aftermarket/fake batteries are manufactured and sold I can shed a little light on this subject.

There are literally hundreds of small factories that produce aftermarket batteries, some with brand names some without. And then many are just copies with fake labels.
Most of these factories come and go and quality varies day to day, but there are also very reputable factories. Remember even the "factory" batteries are made here in China.

When you buy Ebay batteries you really don't know what you are getting because the guy selling them on Ebay honestly may not know if the batch he just bought is any good.

With that said we use the cheap batteries here and have good look with them. When they fail the use time drops to 1-2 hours, so its not a complete failure.

My suggestion:

Ask to see if the seller is buying from a regular supplier/factory and how long has he been selling them. Also if it too good to be true (really cheap) it usually is. Most of the really low quality batteries are also the really cheap ones and I suggest staying away from them.

And no, I am not in the battery export business, but do occasionally shoot commercials here :)
