I shoot sports with team huddles where I want to record the coach's voice clearly. I also shoot some interviews after games. What mic should I get for my EX1? I can spend $1000, but if there's a good reason to spend more or less...

Sennheiser 416 new or used all the mic you'll ever need.

Totally agree. I own a 416 and the MKH60 and both are fantastic. Both will last me my whole career.

Just to close the loop, I settled on a Schoeps CMIT-5U. The deciding factor was reviews stating it had flatter freq response vs the 416's exaggerated high end.

Sorry about this, but as a broadcast engineer for more years than I care to admit, high frequencies do roll off with distance.-particularly in the case of shtogun microphones. Sennheiser is what I use to consistently deliver the goods. Rode would be very close second choice.

I had 2 Senheiser ME66s and then finally got the MKH416... great mic, totally worth the extra money... phantom powered glory.
