i've been using Clip Browser version 1 successfully for about a year now. i haven't had a need to upgrade to 2.5, but i did it anyways just to see the difference between the two. If you're only dumping/transferring footage from the SxS cards to a hard-drive, do you really need to use Sony Clip Browser? this leads me into my second question. on version 2.5 you have an option to use Data Protection and/or CRC. does anyone find these two functions to be necessary? i've read a few threads where people have had trouble transferring footage, but they weren't very specific. so, what are your thoughts?

thanks,
Mike

You don't HAVE to use Clip Browser, but it's better than Windows Explorer or the Mac equivalent for a few reasons (and others I don't use/can't think of):

Renaming files

Meta tagging

Splitting files (for saving disc space/putting files on DVD-R and whatnot)

Moving individual video clips to other folders. It's not so easily done in Windows Explorer, et. al.

It's free...why not?

Its also important if you want to use an NLE that doesn't support the mp4 files but does support them rewrapped into MXF. Unfortauntaly CB 2.5 re-wraps them in a different way to previous versions and it break compatibility with a few NLEs.

You can also batch export to other codecs, some for purchase, such as IMX, some free (DV).
