I'm shooting to tape with the HVX205A. 24pA. FCP''s Log and Capture preview is reading my timecode just fine as I control the camera from the application. When I set an in and out point and try to capture "Clip," I get an error message about timecode.

“Batch Capture: Timecode Error: Unable to locate the specified timecod. You may have specified a timecode with insufficient room for a pre/post roll operation.”

I can just hit "Now" and get everything into the computer, but that means I have to make markers again and create subclips. There's obviously something wrong. I've posted this before and no one has responded. I've been trying everything I can think of and I can't figure it out out. I need help.

When capturing from tape, FCP needs to have 1-3 seconds of pre-roll before capture so it can read the code prior to getting to the correct point on the tape. It's needed for any tape-based edit deck. otherwise the system does not know when to start capture.

I've seen this happen when footage is too close to the beginning of the tape, and there is not enough footage to allow FCP to read the code. It can also happen when there are timecode breaks (gaps between recordings where no code is recorded) and FCP sees it as the start of the next tape. The only way you can capture with FCP is to hit "Now" because it tells FCP to capture whatever is under the playback head, and doesn't use timecode for device control

The fix: Record 10 seconds of black prior to shooting anything else. Leave the lens cap on and record for 10 sec.

Enjoy

Jerry
