View Full Version : Ultimate HV30 vs HF100 question

Okay, I've read the other threads on this subject, and the answer still eludes me. So let me just ask a very simple question...
Between the Canon HV30 and HF100, which ultimately produces the best image?
I don't care about workflow issues. I don't care about the difference in pixels between HDV recorded onto MiniDV vs. AVCHD. Don't blind me with science.
Just tell me which one looks the best.
Say I want one of these two cameras for the following purposes:
- making direct-to-video movies or documentaries
- shooting stock video footage
- shooting content for the web
I don't care if it takes longer to capture a tape as opposed to tranferring a file from an SD card. I have Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c, so I can go either way. I'll be recording sound externally, so I don't care which cam has better preamps.
The only thing that matters to me is the quality of the final image.
In 24 hours, I will decide which one to buy. So please weigh in.
Thanks!
Sirocco

I am also pretty sure one has a slightly larger sensor than the other. This might be something to consider as well.

Thanks Sirocco. The problem is, I don't know what's been done to those clips in post. I need a comparison of raw footage from both cams. Vimeo's compression interferes with a true analysis as well. But thanks for the links!

Thanks Astimatic. But keep in mind I'm asking about the HF100, not the HFS100. I wish Canon wouldn't give their cams such similar names.
Anyone else???

Ok...those two cameras have the same sensor electronics...but two major differences.
First, the HV30 has MUCH better ergonomics. It has a wheel for focus and other adjustments. And some adjustments are missing altogehter on the HF100. The HF100 has a joystick on the screen. The HV30's joystick is under your thumb. HF100, C, HV30 A
Second, the HV30 record HDV to tape, the HF100 AVCHD at 16Mb/s to SDHC. Not only does the HV30 record a 1440x1080 vs 1920x1080 image, at 25Mb/s vs 16Mb/s, the HF100 will have a better recorded image. Does more older software support HDV than supports AVCHD, yes. However, current software supports both and the AVCHD image will be better. This years Canon SDHC cameras (the HF20/200, HF S10/100, and last years HF11) record at 24Mb/s for an even better image. HF100, A-, HV30 C.
In size, because it doesn't have a tape drive, the HF100 is smaller and lighter. Pricewise, as last years model the HF100 is $530 or so, vs $600 for the HV30.
You choice, not an easy one. For $750 you can get an HF200 which has the HF100 UI with 24Mb/s. For $1000 you can get an HF S100 which has the HV30's controls, and some more, with 24Mb/s recording.

I say the HF100 as I think the AVCHD codec is superior to HDV. Mpeg-2 is so ancient, its about time they come up with a smarter algorithm...
I chose the HF100 to buy over the HV30...
I agree with DavidNJ below, although I've read that there is very little if any difference in quality from 17Mb/s to 24Mb/s. AVCHD produces a great image for the price.

Hello,
I was in the same situation and decided to go for HF10.
My reason was the full HD resolution and probably a better codec support in near future.
Since I'll be using the camera for family, kids, etc and in my old miniDV cam a tape was in the camera for some weeks (recording a little here, there), I think storage won't be a bigger issue and prices are going down.
About manual controls, I don't care about it for family stuff. I want a P&S camera so my wife can use. These are my personal needs and opinion.

I had an HV20, but recently upgraded to an HG20 (same sensor/electronics as the HF100). The HG20 definately has a way sharper image, but I find that the rolling shutter artifacts are much more amplified with this camera, probably because it has a smaller sensor. I guess if you don't mind or won't be in situations that would bring out rolling shutter issues, the HG20 produces a better image.

Just tell me which one looks the best.
In another thread, it was mentioned that Consumer Reports rated the picture quality of the hv30 as "excellent" and the hf10 as "very good." The hf10 is the hf100 with on-board memory.

Been reading it all and weighing the options. Have finally decided the HV30 is the right cam for me. Planning to order it first thing in the morning.
Thanks for the help, everybody!

I have shot with both and I think the HV30 has slightly better image quality and slightly better controls
(no focus wheel on HF100, it is in the menus instead).
Funnily enough, just this minute I posted some almost raw HF100 footage before seeing your thread.
Here's the link anyway.
