just to verify (anyone have real world experience) that i can get a firewire400 to 800 cable and connect the firewire400 port on my hpx170 to the firewire800 port of a macbook pro...

Yes, you can. One thing I did though was buy an expresscard34 adapter with extra firewire ports on it to plug the camera into, and have an external firewire 800 drive plugged into the built in FW800 on the (new) MBP.

I use the same setup as de selby when capturing direct to a MacBook Pro. It has the advantage of providing two separate FW buses for more throughput when capturing, and the FW slots on the expresscard adapters are not powered (unless they are plugged into a separate power source), which I always feel is safer, because there is less chance of frying the camera's FW port.
