Depends on what you want to do with it. If you're into filmmaking, the JVC might not be the first choice because it has very limited manual controls and it doesn't shoot at 24fps, it only shoots 30p.

And since you posted this in the QuestFest Forum, I'm assuming you plan to use it for a QuestFest entry?

mitchdchapman,

Some pretty bad stuff comes up on Google when you look up sonic cameras. Those prices seem ridiculous. Stay away from that website.

If you're buying a camera online, buy it from a good source like BH Photo video. Otherwise you'll end up with major headaches and might not ever get the product.

Otherwise consider second hand stuff from sellers with good feedback on ebay or even users here in the marketplace. Do your research before you buy anything online.

if you can, get a DVX100.

That'll be your best bet. When in the range of less than 1000, everything is basically the same.

Just from personal experience, I wouldn't go for the JVC GR HD1 -it's an older camera and the footage isn't anywhere as clean as it should be compared to many other comparable HD cameras available today from Canon/Sony/etc.

I've been very happy with a HV20 for the more mobile stuff, but I think a great first real camera would be a DVX100. You'll thank yourself later for the control you get to make your videos look great. I would recommend looking around on this forum's marketplace and others like it for members looking to sell their cameras.

in fact, here are some links for you to check out:

sonic camera is a bait and switch company. Before you buy any camera, look up the company at:

Do NOT buy the JVC GR-HD1. It was fine in 2004 as the first HDV camera but the quality is quite poor compared to what you can get for much cheaper. I highly recommend the HV20(or 30/40). The quality is absolutely fantastic especially when you consider how cheap they are.

I use it as a B-Camera for XH-A1's and it mixes VERY well. You wont regret it.
