Visionary "Do you see what I see?"
Visionary
Snippets of a dream. Flashes of a beautiful blonde woman.
Strange images not yet understood. A man awakens from his vision. He must get to this woman.
This man is on a quest to answer the call of his visions, to save strangers from disaster, or is it just to save his own peace of mind….
a brothersstudios.com production
April 4th:
I will use this spot for some notes and news on all things Visionary. This is my first ever entry into a DVXfest. Wish us well?
-This will be a very straight forward film. I intend to use this excersise to hone our skills with the DVX. We are fairly new to this and very new to this camera.
I have yet to settle on the cast. There are 3 principles. I know who want, I just need to secure their services. A few supporting players ( background folk) can be aquired as well, but I am not so worried about that. The script is essentially completed.
An ordinary man gifted with foresight ( prophecy?) feels compelled to help those in his visions. We will see a slice of his life. A few frantic hours to find a young woman he knows he must reach. Why? We will find out as the story moves along. How does an ordinary man, with an extraordinary gift (curse?), deal with extra ordinary circumstances?
I am jazzed about the whole deal. My Brother (brothersstudios.com) will be working on this with me.
April 5th: I am working on a new poster. I threw that 1st one together in about 5 minutes because I was impatient to post and get some word of mouth rolling. It will be up soon.
- working on shot list
April 6th: Final poster complete and posted. Shot list almost completed ( stupid full time job...)
April 7th: The real possible final poster is up.
April 15th: Filming is scheduled to start on the weekend of May 16th . Psyched~!@#!

May 17th: First day of shooting went well. Things always come up. I did not get as much in the can as I had hoped.
May 24th: Another day of shooting scheduled for the 27th or 28th, depending on the weather

Will this film be near-future? I'm wondering based on those cool location images.

Yeah. I sent it to Jason Ramsey first, but I think he was absolutley bombarded by pitches and got no response so I sent it the other mods.

Nope it is present day. That glass building is a few blocks from my place. i have always wanted to do a long rolling shot of someone running in front of that gorgeous long curved front! It is a performing arts center.

I'm also fabricating two different types of steady cams for this shoot. One is hand held and the other is going to have a shoulder harness. I'm hoping to have completed them in time for production.
Things are rolling along! We have major obstacle to overcome at this point. My computer crashed big time 2 days ago. It is either the cpu or motherboard. And as most of you guys know....money is tight. Not real sure what we are going to do at this point..but Im praying for a miracle! hehe. It's cool, we'll be alright.

I have faith the problem with the computer will be the biggest obstacle we will have and it will be fixed soon
Well, I got my comp running again this evening. It's a long story involving a new mother board, wondering if my cpu was REALLY supported by this newer board, realizing I needed DDR2 RAM instead of the DDR I had on hand...and finally goofing off tonite and putting my old mother board back in with the new monster sized fan and heat sink in...and it started right up....I don't get it. Maybe that miracle I was praying for came through. It was almost like a QuestFest movie....."Quest for The Missing Bytes". Although for awhile there I was ready to call it "Throw Motherboard from the Train"
Thanks for all of your words of encouragement!

Yup! Now that the major catastrophy is outta the way I can continue with the actual movie making process! you guys are awesome! Thanks
Pre-production is rolling along.Last bit of equipment aquisistion. Tweaking script and shot list. I have a decision to make in regards to the lead role. My first choice backed out due to scheduling conflict (Hello?! We are making a movie here....shouldn't that take priority?!!!) Ah,Life....it's better on film.
What kind of budget do most other people have for their movies in the Fest? It may not be appropriate to ask..like asking a lady how old she is, but I am curious. Not counting equipment that I already have, I guess I am spending very very little, $150 (maybe $200 after I buy food for everyone...)or so I guess.
Post (That was supposed to say PRE!)production is essentially complete ( is it ever really complete until you are actually filming?) Just waiting for our shoot day and tweaking everything.
oops....hit a sore spot?!! hehe
I would really like to have a real photographer to take the still shots I need, but it looks like I will have to do it....man, I have to do EVERYTHING! 8 days and counting to shoot day.
Keeping a watchful eye on the weather. My shoot date now has a 30% chance of rain.
95% of my shots are exterior, so I am hoping the weather holds out.

Posted a few pictures from our first day of shooting (1st page of thread, 3rd post down) All in all, things went well. Had a few sprinkles fall from the sky. Had more pedestrain traffic than I expected, but a good day. The lead, Bobby Rapson, did a fantastic job, as did Darryl Glen, who travelled up from Tennesee to shoot his scenes. Enjoy

Why amazingly enough my dreams consist of flashing beautiful blonde women (actually I prefer brunettes/black haired ladies) - beaaaautiful long hair all the way down their backs (none on their heads... juuust down their backs!)
Right I'll stop that cannibalising of your synopsis! This is intriguing (and i mean that - not in the faux compliment of 'interesting...') yep with the extra dots... This is a kind of suspense story that I look forward to - im keen to see what you make of these locations too - a very modernist style of bts shots there and im wondering if that has translated in into your principle cinematography!
Well, the blonde has turned into a brunette (easy fellas, she's my daughter and she is much, much too young and precious!)
I am finding myself wondering how others deal with what I am going through at the moment. I am relatively new at filmmaking. This is my first “real” short film. I am having trouble being satisfied with how things are turning out as compared to what I have envisioned. I understand you will rarely find the intent and result coalescing perfectly. But how often are directors or writers really, truly unsatisfied? I tried to plan this out as detailed as I could. I certainly learned a lot of lessons, with many more to come in the post production phase. To what extent are others disappointed and how do you handle it? Do you guys just know that is what comes with the territory? I thought I was prepared for whatever shortcoming there was between the film in my head and the film in the can, but I guess not as prepared as I thought.
Don’t get me wrong, I have not given up, but I am becoming a bit frustrated. I guess it does not help I really do not know what I am doing! This is part of the learning process as much as learning how to use a particular NLE, but there is no manual for this.
So, tell me, what is your experience in this area? How do you handle coming to grips with the your film not turning out as you pictured?
I hope this is actually intriguing! It was in my head!

There is always a bit of a breakdown between what you see in your head and the reality of the actual shot. Locations, costumes, actors interpretations and even the blocking will change according to the situation. Your ability to now see in a 3-space where you can move around the set and the actors, gives you a different perspectives especially when it comes to angles and even cool blocking.
That may help to accentuate those carefully planned shots, but by no means negate them. Your planned shots are the shots you need for the dramatic PUNCH. The cool shots that you never thought of are the ones that add STYLE to the movie.
Just remember that filmmaking is an organic process and scenes tend to grow and take on a life of their own. Most times this is a good thing and you have to allow it room to breathe and stretch.... but within the space of the movie. If what you're seeing is not working, simply because it's not working, then take some time to breathe and let the scene speack to you. Walk around the set, have the actors run lines and let yourself see what the scene is REALLY about.
That will will considerably.
It's been a few busy days and I have not been back to the thread since I threw that question out there. Thanks for the response Puck.
I have been editing a bit along with all the normal life stuff. I am getting to like what we shot more and more. It is not exactly as I pictured. But with the other elements being edited in, I am enjoying what we have done so far. I want to be happy with it, but lets face it, we don't make movies for only ourselves. We make them for others to enjoy as well. I am by no means thinking we have created a masterpiece, or even a winner in this contest, but I do think people will enjoy it. And I continue to learn, which is way cool.

One thing I find myself doing when working on anything creative is to picture it as a three dimensional model with my eyes open. I can actually move objects and people where I want them in my minds eye. I know this sounds weird but when you move a lot you began to picture a room set the way you want it while it is empty and set things the way you want them so you do not find yourself moving heavy things around a lot. The same can be done with your films picture everything where you want it and move it, hear it see it in your minds eye. picture yourself in the theater watching it and how you would want to see it. You also have to find peace with certain things so not to nit pick it to death. "Think of your film like a sweater that has a lint ball on it . Get the lint ball off but stop before you unravel the whole sweater. Even a old sweater can be full of more character and comfort than perfect brand new sweater." Can not wait to see it lil Bro It will be fine I know it.
I like the old sweater analogy....makes me think of Bill Cosby!

We are getting close to having a complete film. Some editing tweaks and sound work. I have one special effect shot I am worrying over and trying to figure out. I am really worrying about compression. I have done a few test exports and I think that in the end this is going to be my biggest challenge! It really did not look as good as it could. I have more reading to do. What is life without challenges?!....uh..easy?

Hmmm What are you editing on? I did a 480p output of my rough included all components (around 5:40), with place holder for credits and came at 35mb and was good quality. Im going for a 720P output for the upload.

I am editing in Vegas Pro 8. I've read a lot of recommendations and I am still having a bit of trouble. I'll keep reading and trying!
I use Vegas 7.0e and have the best luck with these settings, might be worth a try:
Render as- MainConcept AVC/AAC (mp4)
Project tab - BEST
Video tab - custom frame size (720 x 480), allow source to adjust frame size, Profile:main, 29.970 (NTSC), field order:none(progressive), variable bit rate, 2-pass, maximum(bps): 2,000,000, Average(bps): 986,000
Audio tab - include audio, sample rate:44,100, Bit rate: 96,000
This usually gets me a good looking 6:10 movie that comes in at about 48mb and displays at 784 x 432.
Might be worth a try? Hope this helps....
Thanks Zaza. I will definetly give this a try! I am almost dome with the entire film and will be ready for the final render in a day or so!~

I want you to promise me never ever to use your cross fade/dip to black for a long, long time.
There is a lot of running in this film. We see him run into the scene and we see him run out of it. All of that time spent running could really have been told with one or two shots. There was so much more story development and actual story telling that could have been done with this time. More character development... just something more than running. We get that he sees the future and he's trying to prevent things from happening, but what is more interesting is not what he does, but who he IS and WHY he is driven to do it. An exploration of that would have been more interesting but instead we just see him running and running and checking his watch.
I need to go take a lie down now. All this running has me worn out.
You had an interesting concept here and some interesting shots. Some were really quite well designed. Your editor did you a disservice in never doing any hard cuts. Everything was a fade and an unmotivated fade. Even the sound faded out so there was no real transition from shot to shot. You need to carry the sound over from one scene to the next, do a proper cross fade, and then it's not so jarring. The best edits are the ones we never even have to think about. They're so natural there's rhythm to them.
Decent job and I'm glad you submitted. Focus on story and what makes it really unique and you'll have a much better film, either with this one or the next fest.

Had a lot of static running in your sound. Tune some of that down and let the music take over, then add some city sound effects and no more static. The acting and the story was alright. Good effort making the film.
Thanks all for the time to comment. I just returned from Cornerstone Music Festival, so I have missed a bit since viewing started.
Your reviews and observations are on the money. The story is sparse. I think I over thought the not over thinking....?

You did have some really cool shots/moments here and there but I felt like you just kept repeating things over and over again a little too much.

I agree with Rodney about the running/repetition and the lack of hard cuts. There was too much of that and not enough story here. Given that, I do see some interesting shot composition in the film.

I have to agree with Puck and everyone else...we know the story could have been more developed and there were serious audio problems, the edit needs a tweak and the acting could be better, not to mention you need to render in a larger format next time.
That said... I really liked the story concept! The opening shot was creative and all the visions flashing in worked for me, just not repeatedly throughout the film. I also liked the opening music. The final tune didn't seem to work. This would have been a great TimeFest entry.
Lots to work on, but hey, that's why we're here. Nice first effort and I expect to see some good stuff from you in the future!

I agree and sympathize with the render size error. If not for Chris Curl helping me, TFR would have comeout looking like an 8 bit NES game.
Good story though. I dig the remot viewing aspect but agree it could have been beefed a little more. And when it comes to actors, Craigslist is your friend, but ignore anyone who criticizes acting in an indy short...especially Zaza. :)
Thanks again. Your views are appreciated. I kinda wussed out on the story. I thought we would get a short under our belt before taking on a "real story", but it was not a good idea! I shouldn't leave anything on the table.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
This makes me want to go home and get my camera and try this thing again!
But you know...I have to diagree a bit with the acting. I think my volunteers did a pretty good job. They really did not have a lot to work with!

Hey ... pretty Good Thriller .... the story had little background ... and you had some problems with the running sequences .... (somtimes they are running, after they are running slower ... and there is a shot ... the hooded guy is seen starting to run after he was supposed to be running already) ... the Flashbacks (Visions) were Great .... Keep it up !!!

When you are an old " hooded man" like me you have to stop sometimes to catch your breath . I will have to defend the story of the film. the whole idea of the story is he is trying to beat the clock of course that is obvious however, it is more a story of good and evil and intimidation as well as heroism. I believe that this story is more suited for a longer film so that the characters can be developed not from the beginning but from a point where you understand the emotion and drive of the visionary. As far as the work, it is a good example of a first time film, using new equipment and limited resources. None of the actors are from acting schools or have any experience. Now I have one experience that I will cherish forever because I did it for my brother. Yes the running was a lot but Mr. Rapsom needed the exercise.

Interesting concept here. The stroy has a lot of potential. The running did get a bit repetitive after a while. I like how you used stills for the premonition flashes. Very solid work on your first entry. We're all in the process of learning. Keep it coming.

I think there is a lot of positive feed back as well as negative feedback and when I say negative, I don't mean it in a bad way. The Negative feedback lets us know what needs improving and not just to bad talk the film. Most of the people leaving a negative comment also left a positive comment and sometimes left a suggestion to improve so we can do better next time. I really like dvxuser.com, everyone is supportive and nice.(Not to critical)
We will do better next time.
I had fun with this film, and I know I will have fun will the next one.
Thank you for your support and patience with our first film.
Bro. Stephen
I have been thinking of how I have failed to deliver my “message” to the viewer. I understand the critique of the fades. I had intended to show a passage of time, and how that failed visually ( and miserably?). I get it. It just didn’t work. But the overall theme of the film. A nobody, doing what is right, all the time, just didn’t come across. The guy was not important, accomplishing what he knew and saw to be right was. Never stopping, always running toward the goal. The failure of that bothers me bit. Because that means I did not do my job of the story teller.
It was an intentionally sparse story. But I think that I wussed out. I should have not used the excuse “ We are going to work on getting to know this camera” and just gone full out with a better, fuller story. So..live and learn.
I am so pleased with the effort of everyone. This was essentially a 2 man show behind the camera. My brother Stephen and I did all of the camera work. We had around a $100 budget! My daughter (who played the female lead) helped with sound and a bunch of other stuff. The actors were all volunteers and I think they were awesome! That is my brother Daryl behind the hood. And my great friend Bobby was the Visionary. I really think he pulled it off wonderfully, with the minimal dialogue. Some of my daughters friends were her cohorts on the street.
I appreciate the comments you are leaving. It does help.
I guess I knew what some of the criticisms would be, ( there was an awful lot of running!! )
We used a DIY static 35mm adapter. Any thoughts on that? There are some image issues on the edges that show up to a greater degree from time to time..What else do you guys have to say about it?
Oh, the render size was a big brain fart. I left town early last Wednesday and was in a hurry to finish and upload. I did not double check my file before I uploaded. BIG mistake. Measure twice and cut once.....please forgive. I did not get back until Sunday and even then did not realize my idiocy!
good attempt! i agree with above posters with much of what has been already said, good story potential, too much running ( if the lead is going to run all the time then at least make him sweat a lot) , and too many flash aheads. i'd love to see what the relationship is between the lead and hooded dude. how do they know each other, why is the hooded dude trying to kill people, why is lead trying to save them? who is the lead? why should i care? good try though! keep filming!
Bring on the next DVXfest! Thanks one last time to everyone that took the time to watch and especially to those that left us a comment. Your suggestions are most helpful. I promise, our next film will have lots of sitting instead.
The hooded man represented evil, the devil. The Visionary was you and me. I believe in a very real sense, that we all know what is right and wrong, and generaly we know what to do, we know what the right thing to do is. We know right from wrong. We choose either to run toward that goal, or we do not. And I think there are those (evil) that wil try to hinder us in that goal, just for the sake of causing distress. I think real evil does not even care of it succeeds in stopping us from doing right. I think causing you and me worry and pain and doubt is more than enough to satisfy true evil.
My intentions and my story telling fell flat. That is the thing I learned the most. The technical side of things will come with practice. Even though with fuller story in a longer version would be considered action or more mainstream, there is always potential to tall a real story with real value.
