View Full Version : Capturing 24pA with Adobe CS4

I'm very new to all of this, so please bear with me. I filmed some test footage in 24pA with my new dvx100b and tried to capture it with adobe premiere cs4. For whatever reason, when i drag my footage into my timeline, i'm getting all sorts of black lines on and around the edges of a lot of the subjects i shot, even when both they and the camera were stationary. I'm sure i'm doing something wrong, i'm just not sure what.

When viewing just the captured material itself (outside of premiere) the lines and blocky edges aren't there. Though, encoding the footage, once its in the timeline, and playing it back has the same result as viewing it in the timeline - little digital black lines and choppy edges.

All of the above leaves me to believe that i'm editting in the wrong timeline. I have it set to edit at 23.9760, which i understood was the standard for editting 24pA. But the footage itself says its 29.97. I've tried manually removing the pulldown, but that doesn't seem to work either. I'm at a loss really...would somebody please be kind enough to help?

Did you create some custom 23.976 timeline, or did you use one of the presets (like Panasonic 24p Widescreen, etc.)? I've only ever used presets and they work fine.

If you right-click your clip in the Project window and choose Interpret Footage, you should be able to specify the pulldown removal. If it's showing 29.97, not 23.976 in the project window, then it didn't auto-detect pulldown removal and you need to manually specify it.

Make sure your timeline aspect ratio matches your footage (Widescreen for Widescreen, Fullscreen for Fullscreen).

Thanks Josh, this seemed to work. I've tried capturing since then as well, and it doesn't appear to be auto-detecting the 24pA at all. Is this common with Premiere Pro? Also, can manually removing the pull-down cause any unwanted issues in quality?

Currently, in CS4, there is no auto pulldown removal and you must always Intepret Footage in order to do it. Auto removal is supposed to be back in an upcoming update.

Using Interpret Footage will show no reduction in quality.

Wow, I'm still using CS3. It works so well in CS3. That's a weird change.

It was changed because they changed the Sequence setting architecture. Now, there are no global Project settings, and Sequences can have independent settings. So, you can have Sequences of different frame rates, resolutions, etc., in the same Project. Because of this, the auto removal functionality was lost (because of the difficulty involved in doing it with nested Sequences of different settings); hopefully it will be restored with the next update.
