So i have a Intel mac 2Ghz 2g ram osx 10.4.11 and am using fcp 6.05. I have been importing stuff from a cheap cam for the past year or so but lost it in the move and needed some footage off of some tapes so I used the dvx. I was able to use it for a few tapes, and than one day fcp wont recognize it for some reason.
I plugged a External into the firewire port and it seems to work fine. But there is one thing I have noticed over the past little while is that my computer gets super laggy and freezes sometimes when I hook an ipod (via firewire) into any of the firewire ports so not sure what the deal is..
I dont have another camera to check to see if I blew out the firewire port on the camera but i dont really think thats the issue..
Also I dont think I have update any programs or installed any new ones if that matters.
Any suggestions on what to try? Thanks in advance

May not be related, but I have about the same system as yours and still using 6.0.4.
Have you seen any other problems with 6.0.5 and osx 10.4? I have read that rendering times get bad, and memory errors occur. could it be related to that?

Connect the cam and turn it on.
Go to the Apple Menu and elect About This Mac, and then click on the more info button.
Look for firewire on the left side of the pane, and click on it to see if the cam is there.

I haven't had the chance to edit all that much since going to 6.0.5 but everything seems to be the same as it was, no changes really noticed.

I tried this and my camera does not show up, I unplugged the camera and refreshed and my external will show up. But when the cam is plugged in it wont show the external is there anymore. Just says FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec.
Any other suggestions of what to try? I also tried imovie to make sure it wasn't just a fcp error and it doesn't show up for imovie either. And switched out different firewires still no fix.

Do you know anybody whose DV camera you can borrow to see if it works for importing?

Unfortunately I don't. I'm going to try to find someone though.

Little update. My external burner is not showing up through fire wire either, so im pretty positive thats its not my camera. Super stoked about that! haha just wanted to share my excitement.

are you trying to chain multiple f/w devices to one port? that won't work reliably if at all.

No, I have tried daisy chaining (if that's what its called) before and had issues so now I just use the direct fire wire ports.
I had a firewire problem like this before. I tried plugging in two of them directly and they seemed to cancel each other out. If you're using multiple devices, did you try plugging them in one at a time? See if the OS will recognize each one on its own.
