cannot record to tape from timeline on my A1 using FCE4

Using FCE4, I am trying to record a 51-minute 1080i HDV sequence back onto my A1. I could use the Print to Video setting, but that tells me it will be four hours or more to transcode. Instead I just want to Record from Timeline. But every time I try it my A1 tells me to check my HDV/DV connection. I assume the connection is okay because I just recorded a few seconds Print to Video just fine.

I am stumped. I've checked settings to allow external output and everything seems in order. I've read and re-read the pertinent chapters in Final Cut Express manual.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!
