View Full Version : Firewire
I have an iMac with Final Cut Pro Studio 2 and Avid Media Compser 3.5. I would like to be able to capture video from analog and digital formats, and to be able to playback HD to an HD monitor via firewire.. Right now I capture MiniDV via firewire. Which Aja or other product would give me this capability with an iMac via firewire?

Which iMac model do you have (what ports are available)? FW800 will open up some better possibilities.
I have the 2008 24" model. It has firewire 800 that I currently use for my external drives.

AJA I/O will work, but that iMac isn't the best Mac do to do this.

The iMac isn't really capable of doing this...
If you use the FW800 for the ioHD to use with FCP, then you're stuck with USB 2.0 for your external hard drive (not fast enough for HD).
You would have a lot more options with a MBP or a MP.

That iMac should have FW400 too, right? I have the 20" iMac, I use the faster port for my drives and FW400 for camera.
As for your question, Matrox MXO seems to support Media Composer too these days, besides FCP. It uses the mini-DVI port to output high quality video.
To my knowledge this is the only solution with iMac to monitor HD video and use both of your firewire ports for other purposes.

I've been editing HD on my iMac 2.8 with 4 GB ram and Firewire 800 hard drives for almost a year and never had an issue. I'd like to buy a twin for my iMac and hook them as clusters with xGrid and have a much faster machine with two 24 inches monitors.
cheers,
