Hey guys,

So I'm playing with my EX1 right now, and I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, but I think I'm overcranking to 60fps with an MxM Express and a 16GB Sandisk Ultra II (Class 2).

A little background:
I bought my EX1 last week. It came with the latest firmware. I decided to pick up an extra 8GB SxS and two MxM cards. I read that the MxM could overcrank to a maximum of 48fps with no problem. So I got my camera in and decided to try out some 720/24p overcranked to 48fps. It looked good and figured that if I ever needed to overcrank to 60, I'd just use the SxS.

Well a few minutes ago, I decided to just try out 720/30p overcranked to 60fps just to see what it would do. Well, it started recording. And continued to record until I stopped recording. I tried it again, and it worked. I didn't get any errors. I checked the playback and it all looked good.

So help me out here, guys; I want to make sure I'm doing this right. I've set my EX1 to record in HQ 720/30p mode. I then go to Camera Set>S&Q Motion. I set it to 'On' and the frame rate to '60'. So now, I'm recording in 720/30p overcranked to 60 fps, correct? And technically this isn't supposed to work with the MxM cards, correct?

Thanks guys!

That sounds right.

How long are you recording? Sometimes you can get a few minutes. Is it one of the newer MxMs? They may have improved the device?

I can get about 14 seconds of 60fps safely on my MxM cards.

Okay, to test it out, I decided to run it in overcrank, and...

...it failed. It ran for about 14 minutes before media error. I guess when I read about people getting the error, I assumed it happened instantly. Well, at least I can get at least ten minutes of overcrank :)

10 minutes? That's all?

Try shooting 400' loads of 16mm film. Normal 24 fps is 12 minutes, so 48 fps is 6 minutes and 60 would be 4.4 minutes!

Remember the data rate for overcranking 24p to 48p is identical to overcranking 30p to 60p so if you can get one you should have no problem with the other.

The lower 'safe' limit for SD overcranking is about 70% extra fps, anything you get from there is bonus. I started OC 25p at 60p the other day forgetting to swap in SxS. I was on my second clip before I got a media error. Thats with KxS.

Yup tahat sound about right. It works flawless for me to at 24/60fps but only short clips. But on the other hand i mainly shoot action sports and there are no longer clips than 10 sek there usally since the gravity pulls the riders back to earth ;)
