I was at disneyworld filming stuff and when i threw the footage onto my computer some of the shots have this terrible fringing around colored objects.
Direct your attention to the space right around the boy's orange shirt and the red shirt in the background, and even the girls pink shirt has fringing but not so noticeable in this photo
does anybody have an idea of what could be causing this? I wouldn't think its DV compression artifacts...are they?

Hmmmm....
I don't think this is right. You should have better resolution than this...
Can you provide some more details of your camera settings you are using and the type of video software on your computer and what method you are using to import the video please?

Well i'm using sony vegas, and alot of the outdoor footage i shot at disneyworld that day has fringing. I'm importing through firewire
I don't think it's a resolution issue, because its pretty detailed there but more of a color problem.

The resolution is pretty bad which might be another issue all together, but what I would say it that the fringing is due to DV compression. It's a known problem with DV color space in general where the red colors within the scenes become pixelated. A chroma blur within your NLE might help smooth that out.

It's the NTSC 4:1:1 chroma sampling. Perfectly normal. The image is at a large zoom (not 720 pixels wide) and there is overexposure and very harsh lighting which makes it worse.

I had the same problem when I first got my DVX100B. Check your CHROMA LEVEL in your scene file setting. DVXs have trouble with bright colors like red and yellow. Try setting your CHROMA LEVEL at about -3 or -4. This will reduce your color saturation some. Also, you might try one of the CINELIKE gamma settings and CINELIKE matrix.

You can also use Chroma Blur in Vegas to 'soften' those jagged edges. The DVX100B has this issue especially with reds.

Having the CHROMA LEVEL that high (5) definitely explains the color smearing. Crank it down to -3 or -4 and you should see a very marked improvement. I like CINELIKE (not D or V) because it has the least amount of video noise. But that is just my personal choice.
