Hello everyone,

I have done some searching on this subject and unfortunately have come up with a bunch of info that does not directly answer this question.

How, or where can I find the answer to changing a particular color (like a shirt) in FCP, or COLOR, or MOTION, without greenscreen.

For an example: I have a shot where my subject is wearing a blue shirt and there is nothing else blue in the shot. Now he is walking under some trees that go from shadow to some sunlight, which changes the shadows of the blue as he walks somewhat. If I wanted to change his shirt to another color without all the crazy artifacting, or crazy movement from the new color. Is this possible? Can FCP, or COLOR do this? If so I would love to know how, or where I could get this info.

I will elaborate if needed :)

Thanks :)

Jeremy

This might be of use. This is for FCP, but the same basic idea applies in Color.

Thanks Brandon for you help. Cool video, but it still doesn't really tell me how to change the color of a shirt from BLUE to BLACK flawlessly.

Anyone else have any techniques to share, or is there really a correct way of doing this?

Look up Secondary Color Saturation Curves on google for color.

That's the best way I found to do what you want.

The three way colour corrector has a little tab at the bottom called the limit effect. This allows you to pick out a certain colour (like chroma keying) and then apply differnt colour correction to this one colour.

You might want to take a look at the FCP User Guide, particularly at the example titled: "Using the Limit Effect Controls to Change a Specific Color."

From what I've done, or tried to do, in various programs, Photoshop for stills, AE for moving pictures, unless the 'shirt' is a chroma colored, 'changing' just that element's color will be difficult without a lot of work in masking or the like.

The 'best' I've done is with Photoshop and still images, using various techniques including creating multiple layers of the original image, desaturating one, cuting out detailed masks, then applying 'layer modes' to blend the desat image with a layer that has a specific color.

One could almost do that in AE, but if the subject moves much, gettting the masking to match will be the problem...

Don't know what the FCP and related Apple tools method might be, but it will be something on that order.
