There are several companies that make 35MM adapters. SG Pro is one of them. It gives your video more of a film look by allowing you to use different lenses giving the image a shallow depth of field. There's a lot of science that goes into this. They're nice but not cheap. Click here and read.

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=94269 read that carefully and watch the tutorial if it still is active.
Then google it
Also the different manufactorers usually have tutorials on how there stuff work i think. Major manufactorers a SGpro, brevis, redrock, letus. Lokk them up. But the first link should sort u out.
Prices range so ur gonna have to look that up also, cuz with the adapter comes alot more stuff like, rails for support, lenses, follow focus, monitor, tripod that can support all that . so u have to factor that stuff in.
Lens choice depends on what u want to shoot
a good starting point would be to have 50/55 mm (normal lens), a 28mm (wide angle), 85mm (telephoto) prime lenses, which mean they are fixed (not zoom). then when u really want a variety u can get some more lenses in between these measurements and also a zoom lens.

it's a tool to adapt a multitude of SLR lens of your choice to provide the image w/ narrow depth of field. It's only an adapter but the lens can be purchased fairly cheap.
you will need it. many ppl have the tool these day and it's prolly a good idea to invest in one to be in the game. is it a necessity tool? no, of course not, but it will make your video stand out from an ordinary videographer.
